After Announcing Delay, No Man's Sky Dev Gets Death Threats

"I have received loads of death threats," Sean Murray says.

This week, Hello Games announced that its ambitious space-game No Man's Sky has been delayed from June to August--and not everyone was happy.

Designer Sean Murray said on Twitter that he's faced death threats in wake of the news. Here's what he had to say on the subject (via Polygon).

Kotaku broke the news of No Man's Sky's delay. The author of the story also reports he's received threats.

Previously, No Man's Sky was pegged to debut on June 21, but Hello Games confirmed on Friday that it's now coming in August. Specifically, it'll be out on August 9 in North America, followed by August 10 in Europe, and August 12 in the UK.

"We understand that this news is disappointing. Making this game is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but we are so close now, and we're prepared to make the tough choices to get it right," Murray explained about the delay.

"The universe of No Man's Sky is incredibly vast. More than you can imagine. This is a type of game that hasn't been attempted before, by a smaller team than anyone would expect, under an intense amount of expectation," he added.

In April, Murray talked about why No Man's Sky was almost canceled and shared a story about snubbing Kanye West (sort of).

LOL, this is the stupidity of people. Making threats over a mediocre game at best. That's like me defending the Kardashians over anything, LOL

Threatening someone who is making a game that you are so excited to play you are willing to risk spending time in Shawshank seems completely insane.

Take your time Murray, make it as good as you can.

Or else.

I can imagine an army of 12-year-old kids invading a building and programmers setting up alarms and traps...

It would be hilarious to see!

They should totally do that for an upcoming trailer or something!!

Ah man nooooooooooooooooooooooo this summer is ruined, got forced into working ENTIRE summer (industry = warm) and I had this game to look forward to and now I dont. :(. Several games comming out after summer it will be like Another mashup of games, it's a wonder that one aint dead yet. I can understand why some Went crazy with the threats, tired of every damn delay of every damn game that aint BF or COD or AC, cause those Always comes out even when we dont want em to come at all.

I hope that they change their minds around 15-20 june n say EY we fixed it lets release it earlier. That would be historical and awsome.

It will get a generous 7, as you can watch Sean play 20 minutes of the game and Still not know what you're supposed to do in it.

I wonder if anyone has threatened Eddie for reporting on the threats made against the author of the story about the delay.

i bet its going to be delayed again, wich is sad honestly, im one of those persons that really wants to grab this one, not to the point of sending death threats, but this series of delays has been going on for a while, hell at some point we didnt even had a launch date, he took the whole of 2015 to just announce the date... i really hope this game is good.

This game will be boring. Typical gamers getting hyped over gimmicks. The gameplay is obviously very basic and repetitive and they beat around the bush when asked about story. Do you think that having billions of planets with nothing exciting to do on them will make this a fun game ?

Avatar image for jasonb520

@Sun-Tzu-GE: You dont really know much about the game, how would you know theres nothing exciting? Its not always the developers responsibility to make a game exciting a lot of that falls on you and how you play the game

@Sun-Tzu-GE: You know, if it would've been a year ago I would've disagreed. But now that the game keeps getting pushed back and they still have to yet show anything intriguing about the game, I must say this is a crock of shit. I don't see the "unique vision" of this game. You have others like EVE and Star Citizen... Which offer WAY more than this game. I'm so disappointed, it's definitely something that I will not spend $60 on.

I don't think he's really taking them seriously. He probably just brought it up anecdotally.

Avatar image for ltjohnnyrico

@xcael: No way !!! No one in their 20's and 30's would issue death threats over a Game .. A bit of fun .. a hobby .. anyone under 12 then this is probably the worst news they have encountered since the "Santa Incident"

@Bumblebee1138: Sad thing is I wouldn't be surprised and I'm guessing you're not either .. And they are probably the same people that wonder why Gamers aren't taken seriously !!

I must admit however, that I have issued a death threat once .. I was about 6 and I didn't get the bike I wanted for Christmas - ... I learned my lesson then .. Never be a brat ... or if you are going to issue a Death Threat don't do it in your own hand writing and address it DEAR DAD !!

Death threats.

Over a video game.

Just push the button now. Please. We... as a people have completely lost touch with that matters in this world.

Lock and load, Sean. Most of these threats come from delusional individuals with firearms training in CoD and BF. ( it doesn't count kiddos ).

death threats? if anything they should be happy there is a delay. delays will give the developer time to make sure everything is working properly in the game so it will be released in a finished state instead of a buggy piece of crap like most games these days.

@Dragon_Nexus: This was my exact thought. WTF is wrong with people? He delayed a game; not a cure for cancer or your awkward partner less existence.

If this game is soooooo important to people don't you think they'd want a product the creator is confident in? These idiots are crying "just release a broken product so we can threaten you over that!"

Avatar image for toan8781

That's what you get for announcing the game too early. The game has been riding the hype train for some time now. When it finally releases and doesn't live up to the hype, gamers will not show sympathy to you.

Avatar image for ltjohnnyrico

@toan8781: Did you just somehow agree with death threats over a game ? .. Please don't tell me you side with 12 year old morons ?

I doubt it he is probably just trying to get attention for his game bet he wrote the threats himself using a fake Twitter account either that or he is making a big deal about some 12 year old troll. Everyone wants to play the victim card these days because they know hordes of blind conformist millennials will go onto social media to post displays of moral outrage providing free advertisement.

Avatar image for jurewicz88

@brightsunbeam: good point! And furthermore, it diverts from people being mad/upset by the delay even if it's just. As in, so no one is allowed to be mad the game is delayed nearly 2 months since he's getting death threats now?

"Yea the games delayed guys, but did you hear/see the dev's been getting death threats?!" Well of course, that's stupid, but the game's still delayed! That freakin sucks!!

Avatar image for Elemental_Jack

@brightsunbeam: That's why half-life 3 will never be made. If it wasn't as good as people wanted the internet would rage.

Death threats over a video game? That is really sad, and its not that serious. I get it its disappointing, I tired of gamds being delayed left and right, and don't always by that excuse that if its delay thar means a better game because that isn't always true. However, I do think devs need to learn how to keep their mouths shut until they a SURE their game is ready when they say. I do have to give this guys credit where credit is due however, they are a small team, and if they can make a game this big themselves, then there is really no excuse to what devs can do.

Gawd?! How sad people resort to threats for a 2 month delay (or any delay for that matter?). Sure I was gutted to hear I couldn't get my grubby mitts on NMS for a further few months but my world is hardly collapsing. I know most of us gamers are generally straight up individuals who are passionate about our hobby which is a good thing. Sad that those on the other end of the scale have nothing better to do, c'mon guys, take a deep breath and look at it objectively, maybe this delay is gonna be a blessing in order to go through more testing and deliver us with a more polished product. I'm looking forward to august in any case and crossing my fingers that no man's sky is as fantastic as I think it looks. Happy gaming everyone
