After 4 Years, Kerbal Space Program Finally Hits Version 1.0 This Month

To infinity, and beyond!

The developers behind Kerbal Space Program have been busy this week as they gear up for the version 1.0 launch of their amazing space simulation game.

A beta version of Kerbal Space Program has been available since 2011, and the game hit Steam Greenlight in March 2013. But April 27 marks the first "complete" version of the game.

KSP is more than just a simple space flight sim, though. As the name implies, you take control of an entire space program, and its your job to learn how to get objects into space successfully and without running into any catastrophic disasters

A developer blog on the game's official site states that the final days of this stage of development are being spent making "cool final additions and tweaks to the game" as well as "improving that sense of completion."

In what is the final note before the release of version 1.0, the developer extended its thanks to the community. "Not that this means there won’t be dev notes after the release, of course, but it’s a good opportunity to give you guys a massive THANK YOU!! To the entire KSP community, who stood by us throughout the four years we’ve been developing the game, who believed in our crazy notion of a build-a-rocket-and-fly-it game, and who continuously supported us through good and bad times, from the humble beginnings of our weird little project, all the way through today, as we stand on the brink of this huge moment for the game, and to us."

You can see some pictures of the in-progress additions to the game in the gallery below.

I knew it was a long time but I didn't know it was 4 years, wow. I bought it awhile back but never played it, decided I was going to stop playing most early access games because of the common getting tired of the game before it's done problem.

If I had to be locked away for the rest of my life with no internet access and could only have one game to play, it'd be this one.

Absolutely unlimited fun.

Maybe Crusader Kings II.

Was waiting for this to come out of early access. With the re-entry heat and new aerodynamics even more so. I only wish I hadn't already bought and started playing GTAV...

@Sl4cka: I hear ya. I've put hundreds of hours into KSP, but GTA Online has my full attention right now. However, GTAV does not have the replayability that KSP does. NO game does. You will be playing it soon enough.

@coop36: its a freaking amazing, hilarious, entertaining, addictive and extremely DIDACTIC game. I learnt more of space travel on a month of KSP than I ever imagined i would in a lifetime.

It really is a great game. Go buy it to support the devs if you didn't already. It will keep you busy for countless hours.

There is no other game like it. The game is perfect in its execution and presentation and it would be hard to make it any better than it already is.

The Big Bang Theory taught me all the SCIENCE I know, therefore I don't feel qualified for this game. Just looking at the screenshots gives me a headache, followed by a brain fart.

It's a compliment, really.

This game is full of science, but you don't have to be a rocket scientist to play it. For me this game is all about trial and error. When you do need to be precise there are tools and mods that make it much easier than memorizing the formulas and doing the calculations. This game is fun even if you never make it to the moon (I made it there, just never landed softly enough to survive).

@Zorlac@burga1988: I think he means it's the only one to have succeeded in releasing as a finished product. He's wrong though. As of November last year, 25% have.

My most played game on Steam. Infact, I dont think i've played a game longer than this one in over fifteen years. It's brilliant, fun and open to any one of all ages

The perfect game.

@xantufrog: Harder to stop playing lol, also remember to keep it simple some times my first go at it I had a like 50 stage rocket going "If I just have more thrust I'll make it into orbit this time!" starts to make you feel like a mad scientist lol.

@dylandr@flashn00b: It was released in a time when people were clueless about the risks of Early Access, and was still in Early Access even during the worst times of the business model. Had to wonder if they'll sooner run out of money to make the game than finish it.

Warning: Please keep your children away from this game or they will be exposed to astrophysics and rocket science. It's a slippery slope that can only lead to them learning something without realizing it.
