Activision unfazed by Disney Infinity

Publisher says it is "flattered" Disney is competing with Skylanders, believes it will continue to lead the market.

Disney today announced plans to go toe-to-toe with Activision's Skylanders series through its new game and platform Disney Infinity. With a formidable stable of franchises like Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Incredibles to draw from, some may think Disney Infinity is putting a scare into Activision. But that's not the case.

No Caption Provided

Activision vice president of consumer marketing John Coyne issued a statement to GameSpot today welcoming Disney Infinity to the market, but also making clear Skylanders is the king of the category.

"We are thrilled by the incredible success that the Skylanders franchise has had in such a short period of time. We are also flattered that one of the leading family entertainment companies is joining our 'toys to life' category," Coyne said.

"We continue to focus on delivering innovative and immersive entertainment experiences to kids around the world and are pouring more creativity into our games. As a result, we are well positioned to continue leading the category."

Activision's Skylanders series has generated more than $500 million in revenue since its inception in 2011. The game's most recent entry--Skylanders Giants--drove more than double the unit sales of the original Skylanders in the United States during December 2012.

I support just about anything disney. This does sound fun and a little on the expensive side if its like sky landers. I especially like the fact that they will be releaseing content on it each year, that shows the Disney dedication that I like.

I agree with the Disney fans. I love Skylanders, but Disney? I can't just stop supporting Disney because of Activision! I only sit here, suporting Disney and hoping they used the choice to buy Lucasfilm and Marvel WISELY. I mean that if they pull in a good amount of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and The Avengers in, they WILL MAKE MORE $!!!!!!!!!!!!

This looks like it takes so inspiration from Disney Universe (if you haven't played that, that is a compliment) I just hope they gear this towards general audiences. I don't want to breeze through this being 19.

My kids absolutely LOVE Skylanders. As much as I love Disney movies, etc I have my reservations about this product. For one the graphics and hack-slash gameplay in Skylanders are top notch. I'm not impressed with the Disney game yet, I need to see more. So far the graphics looks kind of dated and stiff to me.

The main thing with me is this...yes, Disney has created some great characters and worlds, but we've seen them all before over and over for years. I feel like with the Disney game I have seen it all before. Skylanders is making cool new characters, and their powers evolve as you level them up.

I agree with what a lot of people are saying..let's see a Pokemon spin on this. My kids would go nuts for that. They are crazy about Pokemon.

I would also love to see a Marvel take on this.

@marcusmattingly A Pokemon take on this would be phenomenal, great idea! I'm hoping this Disney thing works.

@rey2 I don't really foresee this harming them. Since they're the only one in the genre, Disney joining can only broaden the genre's appeal. I'd imagine fans of Disney Universe will also pick up Skylanders.

there are two problems, one, there are over 600 pokemon. buying them all means you will have to pay well over 1000 dollars, two, this whole figurine thing kinda defeats one of the main gameplay mechanics of pokemon gameplay which is catching them

Obviously they aren't going to admit they are worried but in reality they are very scared, Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Incredibles are huge and lots of kids know who they are, Spyro not so much.

well they should be worried, my fiance doesnt really do games, she will play the odd simple thing with me in co-op, like the lego games or something, but the second she saw the trailer for this she decided she wanted the game and to collect every single character they ever make for it, so i recon Disney are on to a winner with this one

I don't plan to buy neither of the games, but Spyro's portal and toys look much, much better (even if the gameplay in Disney's game seems funnier, especially if you consider a map editor).

Yeah what's there to be worried about? It's not like Disney has 100s of characters that people actually recognise as a opposed to just spyro....

And that's not including starwars or marvel characters

@SirNormanislost

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it too deeply right now either. Disney no doubt has better characters, but if I know Disney's marketing department, selling the toys will come first & the game will be an afterthought. Now I'm unlikely to ever play either game, but Skylanders seems like a solid game with a twist on the Pokemon factor.

If Activision has anything to worry about, I'd say it's being forced into cross compatibility in the same manner as Rockband/Guitar Hero.

Wonder how much those figures are going to cost. Please no more than 5 bucks a piece. Unless each character brings with them new levels, editing items, missions, etc. 10 bucks for each Skylander was a bit much when all you get is a digital version of it in game (not including the adventure packs). If they're planning on June 2013, that's very ambitious indeed. Don't be a rushed product...please!

Activision- just make a level editor in Skylanders and you're golden. I like the ideas Disney Infinity brings, which will make Activision and Visceral try new things with Skylanders. Toys to Life is a market I'd like to see more diversity in. Sales will shift towards Disney Infinity, but I don't see Skylanders being affected as long as Activision allows new ideas to surface. If Star Wars gets into this I can see some big competition. Time will tell. I can see myself collecting those toys and playing with my girls. They will love this stuff.

@YYankee You know looking at it I feel that they are at the stage where they want to prove they can handle the Star Wars brand. I doubt trying it out here would be wise especially with the them testing the waters so to speak x.x time will tell though :D

Disney Infinite's main advantage is it's memorable characters, whom we can all relate to and recognize, from the kids to the adults.

Skylander's on the other hand, gives more of a sense of discovering a new monster in a Pokemon Knock-off.

Plus, who doesn't want to play as Mr. Incredible with a Buzz Lightyear wing-pack, and in a level you made youeself?

Don't be so sure Activision, Disney can sell these like there's no tomorrow at Disney World. They just added a new fantasyland expansion, which is designed more for girls, so for boys all they have to do is sell something attached to a video game and boom, sales of these in parks goes wild.

Traditionally, Disney has had a difficult time making big splashes with their franchises in the video game realm. What may make this latest venture different is the toy angle- a market they have mastered.

Disney has even more marketing experience than Activision, and they have those big franchises, and parents willing to buy Disney collectibles. I'd say it's good competition. Arrogant Activision. Like Rock Band wasn't a threat, right?

Activision knew they could create a piece of shit game and that stupid parents and kids would buy it because it has the gimmick of way overpriced figures. Pretty sure Disney well make a crappy game also.

@gamebuyer22 I play the game with my daughter, I even find it fun. It's a gauntlet dark legacy feel with a ton of characters. I will admit they are a bit pricey, at the same time not. Sure over the course of buying all of the characters I will have spent a ton of money, around 400$ in fact. But in the end one or two a month it doesn't really feel like much, I spend a lot more on coffee and gas. At least it's something I can enjoy with my little girl.
