Activision Touts Destiny 2 Sales Records, But Doesn't Share Specific Figures

Destiny 2 has seen more than 1 million players online at the same time for over a week.

Bungie shared last week that millions of people had already played Destiny 2, with as many as 1.3 million doing so at the same time. Publisher Activision today finally spoke out on the subject of the sequel's sales, though we still don't have a firm idea of how many copies it's sold so far.

In a press release, Activision said that Destiny 2 set a day-one sales record on the PlayStation Store. The company shied away from many comparisons to the original Destiny, presumably because that game sold more overall at launch due to being available on two more platforms with sizable install bases (Xbox 360 and PS3). However, Activision said that Destiny 2 surpassed the first game's launch week digital sales and "engagement." The former is to be expected given the industry-wide shift toward digital games; the latter seems to be in reference to the number of people playing online simultaneously.

Now Playing: WHEN STRIKES GO BAD - Destiny 2

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg noted that the company saw "engagement at the highest ever week-one concurrency for the franchise." Bungie CEO Pete Persons added that Destiny 2 has attracted more than 1 million concurrent players for eight days in a row.

As for specific sales figures, we're left with no firm idea, although we know it topped the charts last week in the UK, as well as in Australia and New Zealand. New content for Destiny 2 rolled out this week with the launch of the Leviathan Raid, while Trials of the Nine (and Xur) make their first appearance today. Destiny 2's PC version launches on October 24, and a leaked DLC pack called Curse of Osiris has since been confirmed by Bungie as real, but we don't yet know how soon it will be released.

Its selling less than the first destiny because a lot of us jumped off the hype train you cant fool gamers twice, I will pick it up next year when they release the ultimate edition with all the expansions for $60, I am not going to be wasting hundreds of dollars on destiny, hell no.

With the first Destiny Activision was quick to point out how well it sold and how much money it made. This game...not so much. That's telling; however, it likely still sold super well, just not as well as the first game did. The digital sales is more reflective of the fact it's an online only game. You don't need discs for games like that. There's no point.

Proof that a generic, sub-par FPS will garner good numbers as long as a company spends billions (with a ''B") on advertising and ''articles'' (ahem). It's called the ''Halo effect''.

If PS4 and xb0ne are just gonna force crappy FPS games down our throats, we may as well Switch to mobile gaming.

@Barighm: Well, if it managed to set a franchise record for most concurrent players, it can't really be that far behind the previous game. I hardly call that comparison ****.

Wonder what the numbers will be a few weeks in. I haven't loaded the game in days and don't have any desire to. I wanted to play the campaign in 4k/60 on the PC but after a few hours on the Pro I believe I already have Destiny fatigue. Maybe it's the non stop flood of Destiny articles and advertisements everywhere I look that's turning me off to the actual game.

@khanwashere: As much as I love this game, I agree, the article count is rediculous. I'm not fatigued yet, but I know I need to slow down. I reached level 269 last night without raiding, and only doing a few strikes. Been grinding public events while doing patrols. The best thing I like about it, is that you can jump on for 30 mins and do a strike or some patrols just for some quick fun. I love story games, but it feels like I actually have to sit down and pay attention to everything and devote hours at a time or I'll forget what I'm doing.

@khanwashere: Nah, it isnt the advertisements... you either like the grind (typical for mmos, but in this case, on a fps), or you dont like it.

@khanwashere: if you're implying that the number will dwindle, then I would wager you to be incorrect. Especially considering the PC release it right around the corner.. I would say a large majority of people waited for the PC release. Whether we like it or not, Destiny is a huge seller and people eat it up.

@batts86: Eh...not as much as you might think. PC guys like to brag they're big spenders but when we do get numbers from their side it's usually around half as much as the next biggest platform's numbers, and very rarely equal to or more. PC centric releases do tend to sell more, sure, but not so much the full multiplatform releases.

It's much more likely the PC guys will shy away from what is essentially a console centric g ame.

@Barighm: See that is where I differ with you. Destiny spews PC. I mean like I mentioned in a pervious comment an FPS with an MMO play style is a PC gamers wet dream. I will also say something like OverWatch and Diablo sold more on PC and you could argue those games were catered to console styles of gameplay. Oh well it is what it is, I like Destiny (play on a console) so the adds don't bother me so much was just putting in my 2 cents.

@batts86: I wouldn't say a large majority of players are waiting for a PC release, but a decent chunk most definitely are. Enough to affect console sales for sure.

@LPDisturbedHU: I disagree, just judging by the Reddit forums would lead me to believe that a large amount of people waited out. I have no actual data naturally, considering it hasn't been released yet. But FPS games especially with an MMO feel get PC gamers super wet.

@batts86: That's the problem though, you're going based off of Reddit forums where CASUAL gamers do not partake (for the most part).

If you comment on places like Gamespot, IGN, Reddit (gaming subs), etc you're more than likely much more into gaming than the larger portion of the gaming audience.

And of course Diablo III sold better on PC, it's a highly established series based on PC (and Diablo III was released on PC first too). Overwatch also is created by a studio that has focused most of their portfolio (thus gaining a large following) on PC. Overwatch and Diablo III both continue to sell incredibly well on PC and consoles too.

@LPDisturbedHU: This is a rather silly statement. The original comment was Destiny is made console first in mind. Where as Blizzard clearly made Diablo III and to an extent Overwatch with a console first approach as well. That's what I was commenting on. But other games such as Witcher and EOS all sell better on a PC too. You seem to be discrediting how large the PC user base really is. Also not sure what you're trying to convey but the official Destiny reddit is probably one of the best resources to gauge user interaction and system preference for Destiny.

@batts86: I never said the PC crowd wasn't large (hell, I'm a multiplatform gamer, so I have no reason to act like the community isn't there), but I don't think PC will be the best selling platform for Destiny 2, that's all I'm saying. Daiblo III might have had consoles in mind, but it's a previously established PC series that also launched on PC first, of course it's going to have a leg up on overall console sales (if we're not including the ports to Xbone and PS4, but I don't even know how well those performed).

"Also not sure what you're trying to convey but the official Destiny reddit is probably one of the best resources to gauge user interaction and system preference for Destiny."

I'm conveying the fact you can't base the sales of a game solely on "geek/nerd" websites and areas like sub-Reddits, gaming sites, etc when a majority of gamers aren't people like you and I that browse them. Sure, you can get an idea that it's popular in specific communities, but that doesn't mean those communities directly reflect the views on an entire group. That's all I'm saying. Of course Destiny 2 will sell well on PC, but I don't think it'll be as popular on it as it will on consoles.
