Activision discusses its current projects

Activision discusses its next-generation console and handheld development.

During its earnings call today, Activision discussed a variety of interesting topics in terms of the company's next-generation console and handheld development. For this current fiscal year the company confirmed that it plans to release Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance, following up the successful release of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, and a remake of Space Invaders for the handheld. For the 2002 fiscal year Activision currently has at least 65 products planned for release across various platforms.

The company reiterated that it will release new games in its O2 lineup, including games in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX, Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer, and Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboarder franchises. Several movie-licensed games are also planned including the already announced Spider-Man the Movie, Blade 2, and a game based on the upcoming X-Men sequel. The company's upcoming Stuart Little games, which will be released on the Nintendo Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color, and GameCube, will be released day and date with the release of the film sequel in 2002.

In terms of overall GameCube and Microsoft Xbox support, the company will release 10 games for Nintendo's platform and 14 games on the Xbox by the end of the 2002 fiscal year. Activision won't release any GameCube games in this current calendar year and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2x is its only Xbox product for 2001.

Activision announced a slight profit in its most recently concluded fiscal quarter, rather than the loss that was expected by analysts. Company executives said that the past quarter was the best opening quarter in its 22-year history.
