Activision CEO talks Take-Two takeovers, $500M WOW-killers

CEO Bobby Kotick claims any attempt to unseat Blizzard's MMORPG would cost at least a half-billion dollars; says GTA publisher wasn't a desirable acquisition.

During a panel addressing the future of massively multiplayer online games at this year's Game Developers Conference, Blizzard Entertainment VP and chief designer Rob Pardo said he found it interesting to hear from publishers that World of Warcraft has set the bar too high to warrant launching a competing product. One of the publishers he was apparently referring to is Blizzard's soon-to-be partner Activision.

Speaking at a Goldman Sachs investor conference this week, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said that just establishing even footing with Blizzard's titan MMOG would require a half-billion dollar investment, and even then the outcome would be far from certain.

"One of the motivations for us in doing this [merger with Vivendi] was our own recognition that even as a multibillion-dollar company with billions of dollars of capital and franchise assets, we would be playing an unbelievable amount of catch-up," noted Kotick. "Even if we were willing to invest the $500 million it would take to just get to a standstill with Blizzard, it would result in declining operating margins and huge risks. And we don't think that even if we made the $500 million or $1 billion investment to get a product out that would be competitive with Warcraft that we would actually be successful doing it."

Kotick also stressed that the MMOG market is a tough nut to crack. "When you look at [LucasArts] and EA and Microsoft and Sony and you pick the venture capitalist--all of the money that's already gone into these businesses that have failed--there didn't seem the likelihood that even a well-managed company like Activision would have the prospect for profit anytime soon in this category. That became very apparent to us. Short of this transaction, I think we would be very hard-pressed on how to be successful in this category."

Activision's wide-ranging Q&A session with investors covered a variety of other topics relating to how the publisher plans to continue riding its current crest of good fortune. After taking a swipe at EA's unsolicited advances upon Take-Two, Kotick noted that the Vivendi Games merger is moving forward well and expected to conclude by the end of June. Kotick also said that the addition of World of Warcraft will especially complement the publisher's Guitar Hero brand in pushing forward the gaming industry's expansion into new demographics.

Kotick also addressed the seeming increase of gaming-industry consolidation, saying that he expects to see less company consolidation, and more developer and intellectual-property consolidation. "Licenses and development talent will consolidate to the places where you have the best prospects for realization," noted Kotick. The comments echo recent sentiments expressed by French publisher Ubisoft.

Returning to EA's buyout proposal of Take-Two, Kotick said that the Grand Theft Auto publisher didn't meet Activision's acquisition standards. "On the Take-Two front, we have had a well-stated criteria on what we are interested in in an acquisition. We need a history of profitability, good management, proprietary technology or franchise, history of multimillion-unit sellers, they would have to be nondilutive and operating margin credos. For us, Take-Two didn't fulfill those requirements."

I can't agree with gonzalezj1 more. The sole purpose of any business is to make a profit, that is just plain and simple. To us, the gamers, the consumers, it is about how great the game is. Firms try to meet our demand by putting out a game they think we are going to enjoy. In the end, all that a firm is trying to accomplish is an economic profit.

@ bigcr47 Ummm... yes, it IS all about the money. Publishers publish games because games make money. In fact, seeing as how Activision is a publicly traded company, it would be unethical for them to NOT try to make the most money possible - it would be a disservice to their shareholders. Anyway, you said it yourself, they have to turn a profit.

I wouldn't mind Activision being so successful if only they would quit being greedy *******. Not allowing Rock Band peripherals to work on Guitar Hero III is incredibly lame.

The only reason I ever played WoW after I canceled my account the first time was to play with friends. The main reason I play any online game now is the social experience, with the exception of Call of Duty 4. I will buy and play Warhammer online because it's something new, I'm a fan of the Warhammer universe, and my friends & siblings plan to play it as well. If I get to end-game and it turns into a constant grind just to stay competitive, I will probably keep playing socially like I did in WoW. WoW demands too much time for me at this late stage in its life. The PVP has become (and always has been, really) an unbalanced joke. Will it take a big stack of cash to get more subscribers than World of Warcraft? Of course. That does NOT mean that other, more entertaining alternative MMOGs will not come along. Like others have said, WoW's success is largely due to its addictive capacity. Just because people (a lot) are playing it does not mean that they do not want something better.

That was the worste rant i've ever heard. "we can't keep up with Blizzard it would cost too much and its just not worth it". It's not about the money, its about making an awesome game, you don't need to compete with which game has the most popularity, it's just about making a great game that people will play. As much as we like to think that commerce is a "war" (like the format "war".) it's just a bunch of guys making products, and like Sony says, they aren't in competition. Just make your own product, make it fun to play, turn a profit and don't worry about being the top dog. Look at counterstrike, it didn't cost them a half a billion dollars, it was just a mod that was fun to play and it becaome huge. You dont NEED MONEY, you need TALENT, then money....

Comeon, how long could the thing last, the graphics are getting outdated. The only problem is people spent way to much money and time on their accounts to ditch them. It's a curse, life's to short,if you play WoW get away from it as soon as you can and spend a more reasonable amount of time on Xbox Live, but in WoW people spend like 8 hours in a row.it's ridiculous, they're paying Blizzard to suck their lives.Unbelievable.

I just think take-two's legal troubles outweigh the sales numbers. It's like, if you buy take-two, you have to take Jack Thompson with it. would any of YOU want Jack Thompson? i know i wouldn't.

In regards to the last pharagraph, what he's basically saying: "if they don't rake in the big bucks, we're not interested." And yet people still say that EA is the publisher that's all about the money...

I only agree with that "it would cost half mill" boast because WOW is in markets other companies can't touch, wont touch, or didn't think was important. unless somebody comes up with a cheap, fun, flexible, expandable killer app.

You get that with almost any decent MMORPG thats decently designed, its the concept thats addictive not nessesarily the game itself. WOW has really over blown things. Before it hit the scene a 200k subscriber base was considered more than successful. Games like eq2 would be still considered the top contenders if it wasnt for the WOW and guild wars properties Last i heard eq2 still enjoyed a 200k+ subscriber base and niether it or the original EQ are going away any time soon by the looks of things. and as far as I am concerned EQ2 in its current state is a much better game than WOW. Companies need to realise they dont need to compete with wow, many of us out there like myself find WOW absolute crap. WOW's success is the result of alot of factors comming together and causing a gross success. You dont need to have a mmo with 8 million subscribers to be successful. Many people are bored of wow they hunger for something new.

Everything evolves. People's taste changes. In ten years it will be nostalgic to look back on WoW. Guild Wars is the same for me. I have never gotten so much use out of $50 than I have with Guild Wars. That game is the model on which every MMO should strive to emulate. They seem to make great money, there are 3 stand alone games and an expansion pack, all in under 3 years! Every MMO should be free to play period. GW gets updates all the time. IDK why anyone would pay 15 a month to play any game. But that's just this man's humble opinion kids.

WoW is just such a strange and powerful addiction. Since it has come out I have played and become sick of it on multiple occasions. Yet after a long break away from the game you start to get that urge to play again.

I agree that grind is dead. Right now, I resubbed to City of Heroes/Villains to check out the new content, but find that I don't care about it, because the gameplay's still the same old grind. The only real fun I have in the game is by playing socially, and even that's not enough to keep me from cancelling my account. Grind is dead, long live fun!

Why can't there be more than one really good MMO? I don't like clicking on a character for hours at a time so I don't get to play MMOs? I think APB's developers are right, grinding is a broken old mechanic that needs to be changed. More people play WOW for the social expierence rather than because it is a good game, would you play it if all the players were AI instead and it was offline only?

Well, since creating a MMO is such a huge risk, I might as well forget about Sony releasing an Everquest game for the PS3.

I think that Blizzard will never stop dominating the MMO market. And if they do start to lose, they'll probably just make another great MMO. Blizzard is like the Illidan of MMOs. It will take a lot of work and effort to kill them in the MMO market.

World of warcraft is about to get some competition. Warhammer online and Age of Conan are on there way and i know many WoW fans who are willing to make the switch because they are so damn bored of WoW. Not that I'm dissing WoW it is a great game but after a certain 700+ hours of playing it you kind of get bored and feel that all your doing is raiding or going arena for better gear all the damn time.

I don't think it's impossible...you just won't be able to do it on their terms. They have a massive amount of content and charge $15 / month. You simply cannot match the size and scope of it...but you can start small and grow. Everyone got greedy...Imagine if EQII for example was only $5 / month. Then over time you build your content. Personally I still hold a faint glimmer of hope for Huxley...

Yeah, there really is no point in going into the MMO market right now... Seriously, I was at a Target two weeks ago, and Tabula Rasa, was only $12.95 in the bargain bin. Good game, but.... Just wow, that shows that unless someone makes a revolutionary breakthrough in this genre, WoW is staying king for a good, GOOD long while... Hopefully Guild Wars 2 breaks it down somewhat... But w/e.

I'm hoping this Conan Adventures MMO will be something good enough to compete with WoW. They have some great ideas, just a matter of making them work well and fun to play.

Which only means that to beat WoW the developers must work thier butts off and make a good game, and cant get away with just a replica and rake in the cash. In that sense I am thankfull for WoW, and I dont even play WoW anymore I play LotrO, which has its own little niche. Can you imagine the MMO that topples WoW !

MMO's are conquered atm from my perspective. The only way you could semi compete is mock WoW and make it free online so you don't have n00bs complaining about the 15 a month?

WoW is only hard to beat if you're also trying to make a levelgrind where you double-click things to death for months at a time. It's time to think up a new type of MMORPG.

Wow that would suck if if activision blizzard bought out enough big companies that it becomes a monopoly, if that's possible. They already have a powerful control over MMOGs.

That's right, leave TTWO alone. And I agree completely with Kotick that anybody trying to get into the MMO market right now is taking a huge risk.
