Activision today announced that its entertainment division has reached a deal with streaming juggernaut Netflix for its Skylanders show, Skylanders Academy.

This program was announced in November 2015, but at the time, Activision did not say where the show would air. Skylanders Academy will debut this fall.

As announced previously, its showrunner is Eric Rogers, who wrote for Fox's Futurama. Justin Long (Dodgeball) voices Spyro, while Breaking Bad's Jonathan Banks portrays Eruptor. Funny guy Norm McDonald plays Glumshanks, while High School Musical's Ashley Tisdale voices Stealth Elf. Activision's press release today also mentions that Susan Sarandon, Daniel Wu, Parker Posey, and even Metallica's James Hetfield have roles, though they are unspecified.

Here is the official description for Skylanders Academy: "The series follows the heroic adventures of the Skylanders team, a group of heroes with unique elemental skills and personalities who travel the vast Skylands universe, protecting it from evil-doers and showing the next wave of Academy cadets how to do things the 'Skylander way.'"

Leading Activision Blizzard Studios is Nick van Dyk, who formerly worked at Disney for more than nine years as its senior vice president.

Activision Blizzard Studios is also working on Call of Duty movies. There are fewer details available about these, however. Activision has only said that it is creating a "robust cinematic universe" for multiple movies, which could hit theaters (or digital channels) in 2018 or 2019.

These streaming specific series are starting to get very good on average. The average TV show doesn't compare anymore.

Kids shows have really declined in quality over the years, I dont even think they have a theme anymore just funny noises and bright colors like cognative junk food.

@brightsunbeam: Or more likely you've just gotten older over the years and aged out of the demographic.

Pricey cast... I'm assuming they think that'll somehow make it more profitable?

1. Produce overly-expensive series

2. ...

3. Profit!

Gonna have to do a bunch of ad-placement in there or something...

@Pyrosa: A show isn't "profitable" on Netflix; it's all about the subscriptions, and with subscribers all over the globe now, they can afford to spend on quality talent as an incentive for more new subscribers to sign up.
