Now Playing: New Nintendo Switch With Better Battery Life Announced - GS News Update

A plane full of lucky passengers on a Southwest Airlines flight got more than a bag of pretzels on their trip to San Diego. They received a free Nintendo Switch system and a copy of the recently released Super Mario Maker 2, perfect for staying occupied while hurtling above the earth in a metal tube.

The first indication of the giveaway came from Nicholas Friedman, a social media manager at Funimation, who posted about it on Twitter. GameSpot confirmed the giveaway with Southwest Airlines, which said it partnered with Nintendo for the promotion. An image shared by Friedman shows a voucher, which he said could be redeemed for the system and game when the passengers land.

This isn't Nintendo's first cross-promotion with Southwest. The airline also gave away Wii U consoles, and the original Super Mario Maker added a special airline-inspired course, complete with a special costume to unlock.

The Southwest promotion was well-timed. It came just as Nintendo made a flurry of other announcements regarding upcoming hardware and software. A revised Nintendo Switch with better battery life is coming in mid-August in the U.S., new Joy-Con colors were announced, and Luigi's Mansion 3 got a holiday release date. Plus this is all coming shortly after the announcement of the portable-only Switch Lite.

southwest? ill do without a switch lol

Seems a little trollish to me... give it them as they land, rather than when they take off and could make instant use of it.

Was Oprah Winfrey on that flight?

Oprah: “You get a Switch, and You get a Switch and You get a Switch!!! Everybody gets a Switch!!!”

Should say: "A plane-full of Southwest passengers each got a free Switch and Super Mario Maker 2."

so lucky, now they're playing "hybrid power", but mostly portable mode.

@nintendians: My tablet is a hybrid too. It has the exact same hardware in it.

@nintendians: joy cons are not a plus, i know you thought they were

Avatar image for nintendians

@bigbluebustn: at least they came with it and you could play 2 players on some games.

@nintendians: Tegra Note, Ipega 9023 (FARRRRR better than joycons, not even comparable those thing are pieces of sh*t)

Avatar image for nintendians

@iloveqwop: yeah, but you don't play 2 or more players base on android games (local/offline play).

@iloveqwop: people forget the chip in the switch has been out for a minute lol and its gimped at that.

Avatar image for nintendians

@bigbluebustn: yeah it's released in 2015, if the "switch" release back then, it'll be a bit stronger and better than what nintendo release with the wii u (i love the wii u, even it was weaker than the ps4 and xbox one).

Those commemorative plane tickets are going to pay some kid's college tuition someday.

Pro tip for the 3rd-grader that wrote this headline: "a free Switch" is singular, as in one, "free Switches" would be the plural form.

Avatar image for 93ChevyNut

@jadephoenix13: Technically the sentence indicates that a single Switch was granted to the plane, not the people. That being said, headlines don't really follow grammatical rules. "Man finds priceless coin, uses it in vending machine" as an example. Although wildly grammatically incorrect, it gets the point across. Something tells me you just wanted to criticize something today and you landed on this.

Avatar image for bigbluebustn

@93ChevyNut: lol you are both wrong because its prefaced with the plural, passengers. dont think so hard, youll hurt yourself.

@jadephoenix13: Did a plane full of people get free Switches??? Sounds incorrect. But you're the "expert".

They will be in for a surprise when they find out they will have to pay a monthly subscription in order to access custom made Mario Maker 2 levels.

Avatar image for bigbluebustn

@R4gn4r0k: sure they wont care considering they just got 260 dollars of products free for buying a ticket they had to buy anyway

@R4gn4r0k: Damnnnn.....NEGATIVE NANCY in da house!!!!! What a time to be alive....people whine about free consoles...

Avatar image for Oloryn

@R4gn4r0k: I mean, to be fair, it's a yearly subscription of $20, which is, in my opinion, a fair price to pay for a free Switch and a very well received game that just came out.

Avatar image for Barighm

@Oloryn: Some of us would be ecstatic to pay just $20 a year.

Avatar image for bigbluebustn
BigBlueBUSTN

@Barighm: its 20 for a reason, they couldnt charge you any more than that without backlash, online is terrible

Avatar image for Litchie

@Barighm: Not for an online service where you can't play without massive lag. Nintendo's online should be free until it works.

Avatar image for Oloryn
Oloryn

@Barighm: Without a little context, I'm not sure how to read that, so my apologies. I pay $20 a year for the service and think it's great value. I also pay the $50 whatever for PS+ a year and haven't minded so far. Are you referring to that differential between consoles, or maybe the "family plan" for Nintendo online, per chance? In the end, I never thought either were THAT expensive compared to the countless service out there that gouge you for far more, for far less. If anything Mario Maker 2 still has over a hundred built in levels and it's own level maker, so for free and offline, it's a pretty sweet deal.

Avatar image for nedrith

@Oloryn: I believe they are comparing it to stuff on PC like steam/GOG/Epic ect that all offer online for free.

Personally I don't think it's a huge deal. PS+ gives you free games and honestly unless you truly buy every game you want most of them will give you games you enjoy. I pay for both Origin access basic and Humble monthly because they offer great deals for me.

Avatar image for Oloryn

@nedrith: Humble monthly is rather fantastic! Great way to get some of those good looking games that slip under the radar.
