A Nintendo Switch Star Wars Battlefront 2 Release Has Not Been Ruled Out By EA

"It is not something that's on the books right now," but it could happen, developer says.

A Nintendo Switch version of Star Wars Battlefront II could happen, but it doesn't sound likely. Speaking to GameSpot this week, Motive Studios lead gameplay developer David Robillard said EA will consider a Switch version "if we see opportunities."

"This is something we'll explore if we see opportunities there, but it is not something that's on the books right now," Robillard explained. Battlefront II launches for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in November. A Switch version, if it ever does happen, would presumably come after that. Battlefront II runs on EA's Frostbite engine, which hasn't been used for any Switch games so far. The Switch version of FIFA 18 uses a custom engine, whereas the PS4 and Xbox One versions use Frostbite.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Star Wars Battlefront 2 Nintendo Switch Release Hasn't Been Ruled Out

EA and other publishers often speak about being platform agnostic, which is a way of saying they want to be wherever the consumer is. If any platform has a large enough install base, you can expect publishers to want to bring their games to it. While the Switch is off to a solid start and has sold 4.7 million units as of the end of June (the latest available reporting period), that pales in comparison to the install bases of the PS4 and Xbox One, while the PC market is of course massive as well. There is also the matter of the Switch's horsepower compared to those other platforms.

We'll post our full interview with Robillard in the days ahead. In a separate interview, EA Motive called Battlefront II's 'pay-to-win' accusations "hard to dodge." We recently played some of Battlefront II's campaign--check out our single-player impressions here.

Why is that even an idea. It's a big waste of time and resources.

The heck? Unless they put some EFFORT in downgrading graphics, it won't go on the Switch. The graphics would make this cute tablet burn on the spot. DOOM and Wolfenstein are possible releases in that they don't seem too heavy in the graphics department, and even these needed to be downgraded a little.

Imagine SWBF2 (2017). This would require more work than EA might want to do.

Perhaps it would help if Nintendo followed the PS4 Pro, Scorpio, and their own New 3DS and released an updated Switch model with increased graphics power. That way its multiplats don't have to be so heavily downgraded; perhaps a Switch version of Battlefront 2 could run at 60fps like the others when in docked mode.

Though of course the Switch is less than a year old so it's not reasonable to expect this right now

@Spartan_418:

There is no small device on the market that could run the performance of a PS4 right now.. or even if it would maybe cost 1000 dollars. Its a reason why the PS4 isnt as small as a tablet.. it needs time to comprimize hardware like this.

The hardware power of the switch is pretty good concerning its size.

It will never going to happen and if it does it will be so late in the game that people won't care about it.

EA should get their sh@t together and follow the examples of Bathesda if the Switch is really something they are interested to invest.

I think they should focus on releasing whatever their next game is on the Switch. It seems a bit late to try and port Battlefront 2 over, so why not start the porting process for Battlefield (or whatever the next Dice game is)

If they were the old Battlefront games, I would be 100% on board.

According to the EA Dicktionary, the meaning of "Opportunity" has been exchanged with "Exploit".

EA is still late to the switch and by the time they actually try to make an on par at least in features game people will be playing the games from third parties that actually make real efforts like Bethesda and 2k.
