A Mass Effect TV Show Might Happen At Amazon

Amazon is already producing a Fallout TV series, and Mass Effect may be next.

According to a report from Deadline, Amazon Studios is "nearing a deal" to make a TV series based on BioWare's popular Mass Effect series.

That is all the report had to say, so it's very early days, it seems. Nothing is confirmed at this stage.

Amazon has been investing in video game properties of late, as the company is producing a Fallout TV show with Westworld's Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

A Mass Effect film was announced in 2010 with Legendary set to produce and Warner Bros. on board to distribute the project based on BioWare's RPG series. One of the hired writers, Thor's Mark Protosevich, eventually dropped out, and the project never got off the ground.

BioWare's Mac Walters said in June this year that TV is a better fit for Mass Effect.

"If you're going to tell a story that's as fleshed out as Mass Effect, TV is the way to do it. There's a natural way it fits well with episodic content," he explained.

As for the Mass Effect game series, a new game is on the way and new teaser art just dropped, hinting at the return of the Geth. The new Mass Effect game will be the first in the main series since 2017's Mass Effect: Andromeda. EA and BioWare released the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition--featuring updated versions of Mass Effect 1-3--earlier this year and it sold better than expected.

The news came as part of Deadline's interview with Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke, who said the company's newest release, Wheel of Time, is off to a great start. "We can firmly say that Wheel of Time was the most watched series premiere of the year and one of the Top 5 series launches of all time for Prime Video," Salke said.

One of Amazon's next big TV series is its Lord of the Rings project, which is slated to debut in September 2022. Salke said the show "looks absolutely incredible and we can't wait to launch it to the world."
