A video game based on the Reese Witherspoon film series Legally Blonde is in development. Australia's PlaySide Studios has partnered with Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios (MGM) to create the game, which will be free-to-play for iOS and Android.

The title is based on the 2001 original Legally Blonde and its 2003 sequel, Red, White, and Blonde.

The Melbourne-based PlaySide bills itself as the go-to studio for Hollywood studios looking to spin their films into mobile games. The studio previously released mobile games based on giant movie and TV franchises likes Cars, Jumanji, Batman, SpongeBob, and The Walking Dead. These include Jumanji: Epic Run, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, and Cars: Lightning League, among others.

PlaySide's vice president, TJ Munusamy told VentureBeat that the Legally Blonde franchise continues to be very popular, which is part of the reason why MGM is working with the studio on the game.

"We have a good relationship with MGM and we loved the franchise," Munusamy said. "It's about women's empowerment. She's smart, savvy, and has a sophisticated side. It's one of those films that’s a classic. And mobile free-to-play has been our bread and butter."

A third Legally Blonde movie is in the works for 2022, with Witherspoon coming back to appear in the film written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor.

PlaySide's Legally Blonde game will combine match-3 and story elements, and it's projected to release in 2021. No footage or assets from the game have been released yet.

Mobile games are massively popular, much more so than console and PC titles, which is part of the reason why EA, Activision Blizzard, and others are pushing so hard on that front. For its part, EA recently paid more than $2 billion to acquire the developer of the Kim Kardashian mobile game, while Activision Blizzard may release mobile games for every one of its franchises because mobile is the company's biggest platform.
