$500,000 of Scholarships Offered By Australian Game Design School
CG Spectrum reserves 50% of offered scholarships for women and underrepresented populations.
Visual effects, programming, and animation school CG Spectrum announced today via press release that $500,000 worth of scholarships will be available for potential students for its 2016-2017 season.
These scholarships are offered in partnership with Australian game and film studios, such as Armello developer League of Geeks. Applicants can choose from six accredited online diplomas in animation, visual effects, programming, 3D modelling, and composition, with the best students moving into paid internships with industry partners.
Co-founder and head of school Jeff Pepper believes paid internships are a crucial part of the initiative. “There is a lot of abuse going on in the internship space at the moment, and we’re proud to partner with studios that actively go against that,” he said. League of Geeks is offering three six-month paid placements to the best performing students in the 2016-2017 intake.
“Independent studios are doing some of the most creative work in games at the moment,” said League of Geeks director and co-founder Blake Mizzi, “We want the next generation of game developers to be excited about making games in Australia, and to make sure we’re growing our best talent with opportunities here.”
Half of the scholarships offered by CG Spectrum will be reserved for women and those from underrepresented populations. “We don’t see this as token diversity. We want to see those places filled, and we’re willing to tweak the programme to suit the needs of the communities that want to apply,” said Pepper. “Being online also means there’s a huge opportunity for rural candidates who may not always have the means to move to cities.”
The first round of scholarship applications is now open, closing on December 14. Successful applications are selected according to merit.
