45.7 million Wii Sports, 22.9 million Wii Plays sold

Nintendo reveals new stats for 27 first-party platinum sellers; Nintendogs hits 22.2 million, New Super Mario Bros. 18.4 million, Wii Fit 18.2 million, Mario Kart Wii 15.4 million.

Nintendo may be facing weakening demand in its home market, but its products continue to enjoy substantial demand in other regions across the globe. Yesterday, that demand came into focus when the publisher reported a 9.9 percent rise in its fiscal year earnings, to ¥1.83 trillion ($18.5 billion). A resounding clamor for software on both of Nintendo's best-selling platforms helped fuel that growth, with 197 million DS and 204 million Wii games sold during the period.

Nice shot!
Nice shot!

Today, Nintendo provided an update on sales figures for its first-party-published games, revealing that it now has 27 games that have broached the million-unit mark during its fiscal year. First among those best-sellers remains Wii Sports, which is sold as a stand-alone game in Japan but comes packed in with Nintendo's console in North America. The sports minigame compilation has now sold 45.7 million units since its November 2006 launch, easily outpacing Wii Remote pack-in Wii Play's 22.9 million units.

DS software sales offer a bit of a closer race in the best-selling game category. Nintendogs remains ahead of the pack, having now sold 22.2 million units through the publisher's fiscal year. However, New Super Mario Bros. and the original Brain Age aren't far off the animal-training simulator's heals, with the former having sold 18.4 million units and the latter at 17.4 million units. All three games have previously been the subject of hardware bundles.

A full list of Nintendo's million-unit sellers during the period can be found below.

@Linkman0714 & @RexCo: The list is what it is... Don't go into fanboy denial because the gaming public apparantly wouldn't know a good game if it bit them.

Wii sport is designed so people can get hang of Wii. Wii play is for improving that hang of things. 5 mini games in first one and 9 in the other. You can't really call them a stand alone game but they do fulfil there purpose in helping people get the hang of Wii. Now if the PS3/360 sell a mediocre game bundled with a controller then you will see more people buying that mediocre game, for the sake of the controller. Same thing happened here with Wii Play and Wii Fit (for the balance board - do you really think people will use it for fitness purpose.) From the chart above the top 3 should be listed as, Kart/Brawl/Galaxy. No typical mediocrity like Sport/Play/Fit.

The Wii is quite an innovation, and I sold mine like 6 or 7 months ago; regretting every bit of it =( I miss Wii Sports, Smash Bros, and playing my old Gamecube games not to mention the Old School Sega Super/Reg/64 Nintendo games you can download....

I don't think something they give away free should count as a "sale"... How many people would actually BUY Wii Sports... I mean it's fun for a while but who really play's it on a regular basis? Just a little thing to wow people with the motion controls when you first get a Wii then go on to play real games like Zelda...

I base my enjoyment of a game off of how many copies of it were sold. Anything less than 10 million is a subpar game.

Even if the wii seems to be hitting a little "drought" during the past few weeks, i still never regretted having one. I'll be anticipating future games like little king's story and other games Nintendo announces on E3.

The writing is on the wall. Nintendo's new direction is working. Outside of Galaxy and Brawl, those other Wii games on that list don't have much to write home about. Except maybe Mario Kart Wii, and Wii Sports was bundled. The hardcores aren't asking for the focus be put on them, they're asking for something to play when Wii _____ gets tiring. Nintendo is the market leader again, good for them. But this is probably the first time ever the market leading console didn't have much to offer, or REFUSE to offer much of anything. Oh well, here comes some more Nintendo slideshows at E3 bragging about how awesome they are making a mockery of themselves on stage with their uninspired presentations and unprofessionalism. Embarrassing? Yes. Do they care? Should they care? No. Money speaks above all others. And Nintendo is swimming in it. That's the bottom line. I don't really expect much from Nintendo anymore. They might introduce some exciting games at E3 2009, but chances they'll just introduce them then proceed to brag about their console sales instead.

Summary of the comments in this article: ...bal, bla, bla, Wii is crap, bla, bla, bla, I'm a ps3 fanboy, bla, bla, bla, I don't even know why I'm reading this since I'm a ps3 fanboy, bla, bla, bla... Really, if you don't like the wii, why the hell are you reading this article and commenting about it, you could be doing any other thing.

"The Wii Sports number shouldn't even count, in my book, since every single Wii comes with it. People don't have a choice but to buy it, and I'm sure if it were sold separately, it's sales wouldn't be that high. That's just me, though." It was said in the article that Wii Sports is sold individually in Japan. Hence the sales numbers. And it's "respectively".

What are they gonna showcase at E3? WiiShovel, "shovel your way through shovelware of epic proportions. Over 1000 titles! Updated daily! The first to find a good game wins!" ESRB E 80+ Seriously, what good 3rd party games are there, that aren't PS2 ports or available for 360/PS3. Theres a couple, but not enough to justify owning a Wii.

We just bought a Wii (mostly for the kids) Haven't unboxed it yet. So add +1 to these figures (I also own a PS3 - think I'd be pushing it if I brought a 360 home too? My wife might kill me!)

2.6 million people bought Wii Music!? What are you people thinking? The Wii Sports number shouldn't even count, in my book, since every single Wii comes with it. People don't have a choice but to buy it, and I'm sure if it were sold separately, it's sales wouldn't be that high. That's just me, though. I'm glad to see Mario Kart Wii and Brawl at 4 and 5, respectfully. Looks like the more hardcore games do sell well.

Last post: The thing that's really sad about this is that Nintendo was suppose to be the DEFINITION of hardcore.I grew up playing the NES/SNES since I was age 5 and I'm 25 now so i know their history very well .I even bought the GameCube, but this is the last straw for me.I am through as a consumer and a gamer.i can not understand how anyone who has been a Nintendo fan since day one can cosign he Wii. You people are really in denile. This is no golden age, because great games are what made Nintendo the grandfather of gaming and not sales.it just disgusts me as a person that has supported this company and who supported this industry to see people with the same history as me except a product that is mediocre and you are the same people who did not support the Dreamcast. Real talk,if you bash on the better console like the PS3 and even the 360,then you are a disgrace to what we all have help build for the last 20 years.Just food for thought.

What? Why does Nintendo even count Wii Sports? It's not even a game, it's a tie in. It's just more shovelware, like every other piece of software that runs on the Wii. This would be like Sony gloating about how many copies of Home have been downloaded (which, at least if they did, they don't do it like this). I'm not surprised that Nintendo is this way these days. They have to clench every little piece of straw they have left.

"and the total number of good wii games out now is astonishing it just about blows sonys line up out the water" Come on,now you are just being ridiculous.MGS4 or Uncharted alone destroys the entire Wii line up.I could not even get into Galaxy,I'd rather play Yoshi's island or Super Metroid.

@ mariokart64fan - Don't be foolish, all major third party games have gone platinum plus on the PS3.From Rainbow 5 Vegas,Burnout Out Paradise,Madden,2K,SF4,SC4,Residnet Evil 5 and Fallout 3.some things just are facts. The Wii is a casual powerhouse with crappy games and the PS3 is a gamer's console with incredible games. Facts are facts.Notice that Madworld flopped, but Wii-Fit is still selling. It's sad to see people who are actually gamers support the Wii and deny how crappy the console is.I bought Galaxy for the thing and never touched it after that because of the clunky controls.yes,Nintendo wins, but people who only have a Wii lose as usual.I'm glad I have a Ps3,because it gives me what i want ...REAL GAMES THAT ARE QUALITY. I could careless about the sales, because I don't get paid from these company's anyway. Those of you who do are just lost fanboys with nothing better to do because the games are crap on the console (goes back to playing KZ2 and Valkyria Chronicles).

Number_1_Gamer, I believe you should recheck your facts. Market analysis shows that the PS3 has a third party attachment rate of slightly over 4 games per console sold, while the Xbox has over 5 games. The Wii? Only 3 third party games attachment rate. Also, the Xbox 360 has consecutively since its launch sold more numbers of third party titles for its console platform than the Wii and the PS3 and this is excluding digital download sales. With digital download sales, the Xbox 360 has over 225% more third party titles that sell more than third party Wii titles. I know this as an econ major and study market trends and numbers. And to add to this, the Xbox 360 has a higher games to console attachment rate (over 9 games average per Xbox 360) while the Wii only has an attachment rate of around 3 per Wii.

@CorruptGamerGX there probably 80m Wii owners out there by now, i can't bother looking at NextGenSystemWars.com anymore cos its always Wii, 360 and distant 3rd the ps3. Capcom don't have to sells a million to make profits on Wii cos production cost are low. on the ps3, you have to sells a million JUST to break even. but why are Capcom still hanging around for the Wii? cos they do make a decent profits. And plus Capcom even develop origin IP's for the Wii cos in knowing they wouldn't lose much. on the ps3 whereby its the endless sequels that are sure bet. @all said WiiSports not count in Japan Wii sports is not included with the system and it has been in the top 10's over a year! Plus most people bought the Wii for wii sports so its a plus for Nintendo both way. plus how much do one think it would cost to produce it say compares to MSG4???? all these mumbers only nintendo can make, well done to them. i don't own a wii by the way

To the idiots saying 3rd party doesn't sell on Wii: There was more third party software sold on the Wii last year than PS3 and 360. There have been more third party Wii games that have sold over 1 million copies than total PS3 games (1st, 2nd, and 3rd party) combined.
