45.7 million Wii Sports, 22.9 million Wii Plays sold

Nintendo may be facing weakening demand in its home market, but its products continue to enjoy substantial demand in other regions across the globe. Yesterday, that demand came into focus when the publisher reported a 9.9 percent rise in its fiscal year earnings, to ¥1.83 trillion ($18.5 billion). A resounding clamor for software on both of Nintendo's best-selling platforms helped fuel that growth, with 197 million DS and 204 million Wii games sold during the period.

Nice shot!
Nice shot!

Today, Nintendo provided an update on sales figures for its first-party-published games, revealing that it now has 27 games that have broached the million-unit mark during its fiscal year. First among those best-sellers remains Wii Sports, which is sold as a stand-alone game in Japan but comes packed in with Nintendo's console in North America. The sports minigame compilation has now sold 45.7 million units since its November 2006 launch, easily outpacing Wii Remote pack-in Wii Play's 22.9 million units.

DS software sales offer a bit of a closer race in the best-selling game category. Nintendogs remains ahead of the pack, having now sold 22.2 million units through the publisher's fiscal year. However, New Super Mario Bros. and the original Brain Age aren't far off the animal-training simulator's heals, with the former having sold 18.4 million units and the latter at 17.4 million units. All three games have previously been the subject of hardware bundles.

@Flipyap28: See.. that's what I don't get. The lineup for the DS is amazing. Prof Layton sold 1.6 milllion? That helps to restore my faith in humanity. Look at the variety, the depth, things to appeal to ANYONE. Now look at the Wii lineup... this is the SAME company! What the heck is with that disconnect?!

lol at wii play, they dont keep count of how many 360 or PS3 controllers are sold... Well done for nintendo doing so well but even though I own a wii, there is nothing at the moment which doesn't involve the red hat mascot....just have to wait and see what Final Fantasy Crystal bearers is like. As for DS, thumbs up all the way, it appeals to all gamers and is the best hand-held ever made, can't wait to see more Mario Kart DS's, Final Fantasy IVs, TWEWYs, Phoenix Wrights and more...

I think that the wii deserves this sucess, But honestly nintendo is very much like disney in the sense that the films it makes will entertain everyone, but it is targeted mainly at kids. Something like sony or microsoft would be comparable to Lionsgate (less ideally) or paramount because of nickelodeon and reno 911 for the more older folks. or indiana jones and the crystal skull to symbolize t rated games.

That is a painfully depressing list... that said, amazing way to move games I guess. At least they're putting out real quality for the DS. Still... 29 million Wii play... but only 8.4 mil SSBB?! I just... I... *goes off to rant*. Oh, and yes, I know it isn't Nintendo's fault that apparantly people can be amused by flashing lights and loud noises as they shake an E-Maracca. All I can say is... they had damned well better use this money to make one heck of a console next gen... and they had better start to use this cash to make soem more GOOD GAMES.

Well, good for Nintendo. =P Sure, there's a lot of rather junky games on the Wii and DS, and Nintendo's not what they used to be, but they can still put out the occasional gem(Looking at you, Mario Kart DS and Brawl...=P). And @SalarianChemist:Grunt Racing...I would so buy that game...=D BAD GUYS!

Kart racing games is a genre that really has a lot of untapped potential. I think Nintendo has done a great job with Mario Kart. I think it would be cool if there was some type of Xbox cart racing game with all the characters from Halo and Gears of War. Can you imagine how cool it would be to have Marcus Fenix from Gears of War drive up to a little Grunt from Halo, and then have the kart go on auto-pilot while he chainsaws the kart of the grunt! :)

That's a good list of games up there. I just wish there were some new ones coming out to add to it.

22.9 million Wii remotes sold, not Wii Plays. People just see the game as a bonus. 22.9 million copies of it wouldn't have sold without the remote after all.
