45.7 million Wii Sports, 22.9 million Wii Plays sold

Nintendo reveals new stats for 27 first-party platinum sellers; Nintendogs hits 22.2 million, New Super Mario Bros. 18.4 million, Wii Fit 18.2 million, Mario Kart Wii 15.4 million.

Nintendo may be facing weakening demand in its home market, but its products continue to enjoy substantial demand in other regions across the globe. Yesterday, that demand came into focus when the publisher reported a 9.9 percent rise in its fiscal year earnings, to ¥1.83 trillion ($18.5 billion). A resounding clamor for software on both of Nintendo's best-selling platforms helped fuel that growth, with 197 million DS and 204 million Wii games sold during the period.

Nice shot!
Nice shot!

Today, Nintendo provided an update on sales figures for its first-party-published games, revealing that it now has 27 games that have broached the million-unit mark during its fiscal year. First among those best-sellers remains Wii Sports, which is sold as a stand-alone game in Japan but comes packed in with Nintendo's console in North America. The sports minigame compilation has now sold 45.7 million units since its November 2006 launch, easily outpacing Wii Remote pack-in Wii Play's 22.9 million units.

DS software sales offer a bit of a closer race in the best-selling game category. Nintendogs remains ahead of the pack, having now sold 22.2 million units through the publisher's fiscal year. However, New Super Mario Bros. and the original Brain Age aren't far off the animal-training simulator's heals, with the former having sold 18.4 million units and the latter at 17.4 million units. All three games have previously been the subject of hardware bundles.

A full list of Nintendo's million-unit sellers during the period can be found below.

@Zerabp: Lol thanks ;) @BLueFAlcOn: I agree with you, but, why those games in particular? Is it the lack of fighting games? For me, the litmus test was Jedi Duels... if you can't do a lightsaber duel the right way with a motion controller, it isn't going to happen. A fighter however... that could be fun, and graphics don't really matter at all.

45.7 Wii Sports? Don't they mean 45.7 Wii's? I'm tired of them counting Wii Sport as a game people have bought. You can only get it by buying a Wii!

Why isn't Platinum included with the sale figures of Diamond and Pearl? Nintendogs is bundled as one, despite the the Dalmatian version having some differences...

@Blockie123: I agree with you 100%. The success here is undeniable (see the article about their revenue! amazing!), but it would be far better if that came from the sale of more great games, and less hardware and shovelware.

Nintendo: Make a "good" game. No Wii Gardening, but a Star Fox Wii, not Wii Fit 2, but Luigi's Mansion 2. Then I will praise you on your success.

@intro94: How is this article confusing, it says "a full listof NINTENDO's million-unit sellers". If people aren't grasping that it isn't Gamespot's fault. Additionally, you do realize that while Nintendo makes a lot of their money by selling hardware (including the Wii itself), MS and Sony use a different strategy. They sell their consoles at a loss, then make it up on the back end by selling games at a large profit. Nintendo has already talked about their problems moving large numbers of titles that break the 1 mil mark on the Wii. They don't need to sell as many games to make a profit, and over time they start to make money from the console, and as development costs attenuate, more from game sales as well. As for TP selling on the gamecube... you do realize I said that exact thing right? In the post directly beneath yours? Also... explain to me how the volume of sales for ANY platform = quality. Unless you think that Wii Fit, sports and play are better games than MK Wii, SSBB, MG, NMH, MadWorld, TP, etc.. etc. This is what I don't get about fanboys... you think it's a contest. Who cares if the 360 or PS3 or PC doesn't sell as much? That doesn't reveal the quality of the games... just the demographic, marketing, etc. I'm also interested to hear how a platform with double the user base of either the 360 or PS3 can't move 1 million units of MOST of its best games. You don't even consider things like relative percentages, overhead, etc.. do you? It's all just, "Nintendo is lord, and all who speak against it must be against Nintendo". *sigh*

his only includes NINTENDO made games, not Capcom or Konami, or others!just for the record and for previous ignorant posters.2nd, the issue with TP despite selling over 6 million units is that is multiplat(gc).3rd,no sadly 360 software sales arent on par with wii.Just stating facts.

"@Linkman0714 Posted May 9, 2009 6:12 pm ET @nappan its not fanboy denial...its fact zelda has sold millions and you know it" Ok... Quick riposte, from the article: "A full list of Nintendo's million-unit sellers can be found below." So, no. As I said in post just alittle ways down... Twilight Princess sold first and MOST in the GAMECUBE. This is about Wii sales, where it apparantly didn't make the 1 million mark. I'm not reaching into some magical fact-bag... I'm just reading the article. "El Conrado posted: So yeah, it's good that GH3 is in the "top 10"; it sold as much on Wii as on the 360." The funny thing there is that the Wii has about twice the userbase as the 360, but sold the SAME? ;)

@Inconnux So are you saying that Wii sports, mario party and Nintendog are adult games? killzone and GTA are not... Please think about what you write before you write it. I agree with you that the content of GTA and killzone doesn't make it hardcore but not one Wii game is adult exept Wii fit so your shooting yourself in the foot trying to defend that one. But I do like what you were tring to sa, just went about it wrong in my eye. Personal GTA is a little to childish for me although fun, Killzone seem to be a PS halo, great online multiplayer but the Story blows. Yes Nintendo is for kids but the problem us true gamers have is all those kid realy think that this is the best product out and that why "hardcore"(as you say) are MAD and I'm one of them. Dont compare an inferior product and say its great when their sucsess is because of their marketing and target market not because its something worth buying. A HONDA sell more then a BENZ but by no means are they eaqual.

@MagicOneUp The Wii isn't even close to 80,000,000 units, let alone 55,000,000. Stop making up numbers because I will prove you wrong again and again. Capcom has only made 2 new IP's on the Wii so far and both bombed, the rest are sequels, spin-offs and GC/PS2 ports people played years ago.

@ CorruptGamerGX Know your facts before talking about stuff you know nothing about. It was capcom's own fault that Zack and Wiki did so badly. Not enough marketing and the simple fact that they gave a game that only adult gamers could hope to complete a kiddy theme. Wasn't Nintendo's fault that capcom fails at targeting the right audiences.

All right first off, Wii sports is packaged with the Wii in america, not the entire world. 2nd, it's already been established Zelda TP and MP3 are not on that list, it's being stated over and over. 3rd, it's your own fault if your Wii "collects dust," not Nintendo's, or any other 3rd party company. They're not to be blamed for your lack of cleaning the house

Hi, we're at least a third of the people that commented. We didn't actually READ the article before we hastily scribbled out some unreadable nonsense. 1. It's an all Nintendo-made list. 2. Wii Sports doesn't come with the system in Japan.

Kenji_Masamune: "Playing with legos/GI Joe when you were a kid was total BA. If you do that when you are 30, then apparently something hasn't dropped yet." So? Should Lego and Hasbro stop making toys now, just because you grew up? Do you own gaming? It's not like we're not making any new kids. This list isn't a top 10, it's a list of Nintendo Published million plus "sellers". If it included 3rd parties it would have 50 entries, only 16 of which would be Nintendo games. So yeah, it's good that GH3 is in the "top 10"; it sold as much on Wii as on the 360.

jeremym1978 Actually...most people consider the modern video game nerd someone who spends 400 dollars or more on a video game console. Anyone who feels that they can convince someone of their maturity or "coolness" by playing Gran Turismo over Mario Kart simply based on looks and not game play just shows how inmature they are. Played Burnout, but give me Mario Kart anyday over that series. I go with fun, not concerned by how people percieve me, only a nerd would worry about that.

Prepackaged games should not be at the top of any list. But heck, if you ever want to create a game that will be cemented in history of the best selling game ever its the way to go. When Wii Sports becomes the best selling game in history (if it hasn't already), it will be a sad testament to this gen's console wars.

what makes you seem less like a child? Playing Mario Kart, or say Need for speed, gran turismo, burnout? If you were at some store playing mario kart, I'm sure that you'd get some looks from the nongamers, because you are in fact living up to the still prevalent stereotype of a gamer: childish/loser nerd. Seeing you play a game marketed for children just cements it. Why don't ya play pokemon while your at it? You know, because secretly it's HC.

Personally, I may have regretted buying a Wii. I bought one just 3 months after it came out and for a while it was fun. Though I went through most of 2007 not buying a single game until Super Paper Mario came out in September. I really was loving the Wii when Super Mario Galaxy came out. Hell of a game. But since then, I went back and bought some older Wii titles but now the Wii isin't even plugged in. It is collecting dust under my bed. Since I bought my 360, I never play my Wii. I need just one game and nothing coming looks any good.

And while we're on the subject of 3rd party sales, here's some other factoids for you people: 1) In its first 20 months on the market, the Wii sold 33 million pieces of 3rd party software. In comparison, the 360 sold 29 million pieces of software in its first 20 months in the Market. 2) From January 1st do December 31st, 2008, The Wii sold a total of 13.4 million pieces of 3rd party software, while the 360 sold 16.5 million, an 18.8% difference. 3) The Tie-in ratio of 1st and 3rd party software after 23 months for the Wii was of 2.4 and 3.1 respectively, totaling 5.5. For the 360 it was 1.4 and 5.2 respectively, totaling 6.6. Keep in mind that there are TWICE as many Wii consoles out there as 360s (and if you don't understand how this affects tie in ratios, you have no business reading this). The 360s tie-in ratio grows to 8.1 ONLY if you add a WHOLE EXTRA YEAR of sales, when neither the Wii nor the PS3 were even around. So the 3rd party games not selling on Wii is a myth. It's just that the games the "hardcore" folk expect to see selling are not. Heck, 3rd party games sell BETTER than 1st party games on Wii, and that's even counting Wii Sports and Wii Play. << LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>

k0r3aN_pR1d3: "Number_1_Gamer, I believe you should recheck your facts. Market analysis shows that the PS3 has a third party attachment rate of slightly over 4 games per console sold, while the Xbox has over 5 games. The Wii? Only 3 third party games attachment rate... ...the Xbox 360 has a higher games to console attachment rate (over 9 games average per Xbox 360) while the Wii only has an attachment rate of around 3 per Wii." Wait, so according to you, the Wii's 3rd party attach rate is 3 games per console, and its TOTAL attack rate is 3 games per console? So, Nintendo doesn't sell any games at all? Wow, good to know Mr. Economy mayor, that apparently has $2k to blow every month for the NDP report.

This information was not anything new for me. I owned a Wii since 2007, and I bought the wii fit and so forth. But, if I counted everytime I had money to buy a new game and was not impressed with the choices... no matter the price which did not bother me. I was ultimately sad. Bring me more Zelda and Dynasty Warrior types of games. Enough with the carnival games and such.
