45.7 million Wii Sports, 22.9 million Wii Plays sold

Nintendo reveals new stats for 27 first-party platinum sellers; Nintendogs hits 22.2 million, New Super Mario Bros. 18.4 million, Wii Fit 18.2 million, Mario Kart Wii 15.4 million.

Nintendo may be facing weakening demand in its home market, but its products continue to enjoy substantial demand in other regions across the globe. Yesterday, that demand came into focus when the publisher reported a 9.9 percent rise in its fiscal year earnings, to ¥1.83 trillion ($18.5 billion). A resounding clamor for software on both of Nintendo's best-selling platforms helped fuel that growth, with 197 million DS and 204 million Wii games sold during the period.

Nice shot!
Nice shot!

Today, Nintendo provided an update on sales figures for its first-party-published games, revealing that it now has 27 games that have broached the million-unit mark during its fiscal year. First among those best-sellers remains Wii Sports, which is sold as a stand-alone game in Japan but comes packed in with Nintendo's console in North America. The sports minigame compilation has now sold 45.7 million units since its November 2006 launch, easily outpacing Wii Remote pack-in Wii Play's 22.9 million units.

DS software sales offer a bit of a closer race in the best-selling game category. Nintendogs remains ahead of the pack, having now sold 22.2 million units through the publisher's fiscal year. However, New Super Mario Bros. and the original Brain Age aren't far off the animal-training simulator's heals, with the former having sold 18.4 million units and the latter at 17.4 million units. All three games have previously been the subject of hardware bundles.

@Great Ragnarok Nintendo's strength is definetly it's first party games. All first-party games will do good. And I also THINK that Nintendo produce more first-party games than any other company

@ Grammy34 Well if you really want a list of Wii exclusives, well the list is long, but out of the exclusives that I have enjoyed: (games that you can't get on other consoles, including old school consoles. These games are my personal taste and opinion, if you don't agree...SO) Super Mario Galaxy Mario Kart Wii Red Steel No More Heroes Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn Super Paper Mario Worms: A Space Oddity Super Smash Bros. Brawl The House of the Dead: Overkill Metroid Prime 3: Corruption WarioWare: Smooth Moves and a few more Now not all of these games were rated 9+ but these games I did enjoy playing and they are only on the Wii. Now don't take me as a guy that is just a Nintendo fanboy. Because I could do the same for the 360, hell I do play my 360 more. But the thing is that I don't defend the Wii because that is the only thing I have to play and I'm pissed off about it. I defend the Wii because I love the system as a whole. The motion controls, to me, aren't what make the system(notice I did call it crap a few times), But if done right you can get a good game. Metroid Prime 3 controls where great. If they made more FPS games like that it would be awesome. And if they could make RE5 like they did RE4 for the Wii that would be awesome also(and don't give me it can't run on the Wii crap either, They could get it to run on the Wii with some graphical changes). As for the Graphics, and HD. Unlike popular belief, not everyone in the world has an HD compatible TV. Hell most my family have TVs that like 15 years old, if not older. I got my first HD TV last year. But I personally I'm not one to argue graphics. mainly because nobody really ever wins. Graphics in games are great, but if you have a great looking game does in mean it sucks, or does a good game suck because it doesn't look on par with another said game. No. And I can say that the Wii may not be on par with the Other 2 but the graphics are better then lets say the Gamecube. The Difference between Prime 2 and Prime 3 are clear, At least I can see the differences..

I'd say smash brothers brawl, mario kart and galaxy more reflect the consoles support base. The gap between wii fit and an actual game is just too wide to ignore. Once the gimmick goes away only the base is left. Controller gimmick help fudge those numbers even more.

now let's take a look at the third party sales because it's no surprise that Nintendo games sold on a Nintendo console will do well.lol. but man I can't believe those crappy games actually have a significant audience! we'll either see an increase in similar marketing strategies or similar games being made!

Lets be real. Does anyone really care for their 1st party games numbers? Everyone knows Nintendo games are going to sell in the millions. It's not a shocker folks. Nintendo been in the business long enough to know what to do.

This is SO not a full list. 1up posted the same list too. But Twilight Princess DEFINITELY sold over 1 million, hell, when EGM was still in print they had Super Paper Mario at over 1 million too in one of their articles. Why is Nintendo not showing all of their games on these lists?

@sgfreak37 The thing you are sick of.... Please name those good games and tell me what is good about the Wii. I could tell you whats wrong with it. The motions sensor has no dept to it. The grafics look the same from there old console. They have limited game that is fun for the idividual to play. The internet play is not up to par with the others. NO HD and the shelf life is on a few years. A good product come with everything you need to make and exspirence worth you money and to have to buy a controler to play games because what they advertise for use when playing is bad make it a bad product. I give credit where credit is due. Nintendo atracted people who would never touch a game and thats great, they got families to come together during a time of crisis and they have out sold the other componies. So hats of to them but by no mean is it because they have a good product. Lasty there is a reason why 3rd party games don't come to the Wii it because the Wii doesnt target the market that these games are made for. If the Wii games like Halo, Gears of War, Bio shock, God of War, Killzone, Army of Two, it wouldn't do well because this is targeting a different market and not the house hold like they have been doing. What Nintendo is doing is not going to change, they have been doing since the orginal Nintendo. Countles homes had one because of games like Duck hunt and the track pad, the original Donky Kong. It got families playing games not just the individual. So Im not surprised about there sucsess but I hate these people who think this product is so great and going to last nd it better then the other when its NOT.

The so-called "hardcore" gamer against the Wii is like the Republicans going against Obama AFTER he was sworn in recently. Denial about Wii, rip about Wii, make up fake stories about Wii (like Fox News, right?), and can't come to realize their gaming world changed and ignored them. Casual in the new hardcore, and the old hardcore are Todds from Code Monkeys. (Remember, GameSpot comment users are actually 1% of 1% of no percent of the game playing public.)

sad to see that wii sports will soon beat the original mario bros in most game sales of all time. theres should at least be a game holding that title not a mini game comp. next thing you know Marioparty will have more sequals than final fantasy....

@ Grammy34 I agree with you on the "thinking about the next gen so early". But I don't agree with you saying "the Wii is a bad product". The Wii it self is not a bad product, and Nintendo did release some crappy games. But it really isn't Nintendo's fault 3rd parties don't know how (or just wont) take advantage of the Wii's capabilities to it's fullest, (or just make games for it for that matter). The Wii does have some really good exclusive games. (most of them 1st party). One more thing, I'm sick of all this talk about motion controls. First people were saying that it was just a fad, and now that Sony is comping out with it, it must be better crap. Who cares which is better. it's the same damn crap. Besides you don't have to use the Motion controls on the Wii. You can also use the GCN controller or the Classic controller. Personally I like the GCN controller better for most games anyway.(at least on the games you can use it with)..

@djezhel619 I have been reading the convo between you and nappa and I get what you mean but don't quite agree. First you talk about motion controls but last time I check PS3 has that with out a sensior that you have to put in front of your TV. Also how could you say story does matter. That is the attude that give Nintendo the ability to make bad games and they know people will still buy them. We as the money spender are giving them the ability to remove quality from their product. Why can't hole them to an higher stander and make them make fun game and have a story line. Modern Warfare for example. you say your an old school gamer but most older games from nintendo and sega had a story line that everyone knew, Sonic, Mario, Zelda the early shooters. They were all story based and you knew the charactors. Thats what old school gaming was about. What so creative about Nintedo games? Wii sports is not that creative and stick figures playing sports............. original people have been drawing this for years they just put it in a game. I give them Wii fit, thats the most inovative thing they have done, everything else you can find in other systems. Last thing which i don't get is everyone looking for the next gen to come when this one is just getting started. Everyone talk about the price of a PS3 but they are willing to go out and buy a new system if Nintedo was to bring it out next week. Why... If a system can last ten years and you pay $400 for it, why go and buy a system for $250 thet will last 3 year then buy a new one for $250 that will only last 3 years. Are you realy saving that much money... Nitendo will never come out with a system that is any different then what they are doing now. It not that type of compony and they are going to risk millions to creat a flop. You would call in an plumber to put in new window in you home, So why buy a hardcore system from a compony that is now to make family/ children games. It doesn't make since. steveroger post is exacly why the Wii is selling so much, I give it to Nintedo they are smart business wise but its not a good product.

Well, you know people want to knock Wii sports being on this list, but either way you look at it, if you subtract the lets say 25mil +/- Wii consoles sold here in U.S. you still have about 20mil +/- Wii sports games sold worldwide, which is still a large amount. Now you have these people that are complaining about "Quality over Quantity". Boy that brings back memories about the old PSX/N64 days. (PS-fanboys "The Playstation has so many more games then the N64). N-fanboys" yeah but most of them are crap, most of the N64 games are AAA") BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!! You know say what you will about any said console. They all have their plus and minuses. The PS3 has some really good games on it, BUT how many of those games can I NOT get on the 360,( and vise-versa). You want to talk about exclusives, their really isn't that many on any console Period.. Now as for the WIi it's self. Yeah alot of the games are kinda suck. But lets face facts, GOOD GAMES TAKE TIME TO MAKE... Nintendo can't cough up a AAA game every few months.. As for 3rd party games, that's all on the 3rd parties. I read everywhere that all these game makers are losing money, but yet they only put games on PS3 and 360.. No one can tell me if they start putting more good games on the Wii more people wouldn't start buying them..Some might say "Well there are so many good games on my 360 so I'll just pass that Wii game up", but lets say they put 4 good games on the Wii, people will start to see through all the crap they put on it in the past..

@nappan:... well then Nintendo is on the right track with progress since they are the ones who are experimenting with a new type of controller and peripherals and games that will suit anyone. Better graphics dont mean better progress, its the creativity behind it. Believe me im a major in media arts in animation i know about creativity.

@ nappan:... well if most serious gamers would have gotten the idea that it would be a gimmick then why did they buy it especially since all i hear from suppose gamers now is graphics graphics graphics. Every single time there is something about nintendo no matter what the subject is, all there is is these people complaining about how all nintendo games are kiddie, not for the hardcore, blah blah blah. Yeah Im an old school gamer and i remember appreciating games just for the fun factor in it no matter if it took me 1-3 hours to beat and just go back and doing it again, storylines didnt matter, big explosions didnt matter either and sure as hell blood and gore didnt matter. So because i still enjoy simple games, does that only make me a "wanna"be gamer and not hardcore gamer? Why dont people stop complaining and just go get yourselves a Sony PS3 w/Dishwasher :P

@djezhel619: ... from the guy with a NES megaman as his avatar. Anyway... Maybe those "complainers" bought into hype, or had kids who wanted one like steveroger. I sincerely doubt anyone could have predicted that the Wii would have only a handful of decent games and a pile of shovelware. I'm also guessing that the Nintendo faithful didn't expect almost no 3rd party support/success, and a huge drought of playable games. If you want to subsidize an extra development cycle for Nintendo, which is what you seem to believe the Wii is... go for it. From the perspective of a gamer, that would be a pretty terrible situation, especially from an "OG" company like Nintendo. Personally, as soon as they confirmed the Wiimote, I think most serious gamers knew the platform was a gimmick.

Good job Nintendo. Your pre-packaged sports game and all those gimmicky minigame titles have earned your billions of profit. Now, can you take at least a little of that profit to develop a full blown game aimed at hardcore gamers who have supported you for many years? Maybe a Starfox or a new franchise? Or how about localizing some great Wii titles that haven't made it to our shores yet? Give the Earthbound fans Earthbound and Mother 3 on a DS cart. You HAVE the money to do it. Oh wait... Nintendo doesn't care about us anymore. ;_;

Notice how almost all of the above listed are either 20 year old Nintendo Franchises or gimmick games for kids. Nintendo may have the edge in 1st party games, but lets see a list of 3rd party game sales that aren't minigame collections or rail shooters. I bet that list would be insultingly short with few past the 6th digit. Only ones I can think of are awful Sonic titles (last good Sonic game being SA2) and Madworld (which are all from Sega, Nintendo's once mortal enemy).

ItsEvolution Posted May 10, 2009 10:17 am MT "ItsEvolution I'm going to stop looking at the comment section for this article. No one is actually reading the article, and it's getting frustrating. WII SPORTS DOES NOT COME WITH THE SYSTEM IN OTHER COUNTRIES. PAY ATTENTION, CLASS!!!" Maybe you need to pay attention the article doesn't break down the sales figures to show the number of stand alone sales for Wii play and sports compared to those sold as a bundles with consoles and controllers. They just give raw data of number of play and sports titles sold. But what does that tell you about the Wii? More of the same really. First party software rules the roost. While this is good for Nintendo which is what the article says and is about. But the real issue is whether this is good news for gamers. Which IMO it is not. Why? Because Nintendo would be pumping out quality First Party titles without the huge sales numbers of the Wii. But the huge sales numbers of the Wii and it's first party software is putting a stranglehold on the market of third party games. Why is that?

I'll be honest though, it does feel good to see a game that you enjoyed sell incredibly well. its appauling when crap titles sell well like 80% of the games listed above.

@supadave841: Yep, look at ItsEvolution... he's having a fit because people aren't "appreciating" how well Wii Sports sold, where it wasn't bundled. Ok. I appreciate that. Now how about a new game I want to play? lol. My 360 is out for (warrentied thank god) repairs, so I'm spending a little extra time on the PC and PS3. I had a chance to play through some older PS2 games... and it's good. None of that fun had anything to do with how well those games sold ;)

@nappan: Exactly. I've played all the quality titles the wii has to offer. but i dont want to wait more than a year for another good game to be released. also, who cares if one company or console sold more than the other. I mean if i actually profited off of what a company sells, then yes, it would matter. but i dont so sales mean nothing just like we pointed out. Fanboys get on my nerves, just enjoy your console with its games and be happy.

@supadave841: Fanboys seem unable to seperate the concept of quality, and quantity. They also seem unable to grasp that the sales only matter TO THE COMPANIES. To the gamers, what matters... are the games. The Wii, as you say, and I personally believe, interferes with the the gaming experience between the low quality hardware, and now the lack of good titles.

Im sorry but the wii is crap imo. i had it and while it was fun playing titles like zelda, metroid and mario galaxy i was turned off by it. its doesn't appeal to the hardcore crowd, not even normal gamers. The wii is pretty much for those who barely play games, but once in a while, they wanna turn it on and waggle their arms for a little bit. This is by no means a quality console. Just because it sold a lot of units and games doesnt mean that its quality. nintendo is more of a quantity over quality console. Sure millions upon millions of people brought the wii but how many of them still play it on a regular basis? mine was collecting dust for a while before i sold it. Sales dont mean a thing. im much more happy with my ps3 which is last in the console race, than i ever was with my waggle station.

The Wii is a paradox. My kids reaction and use of it is a good example of that. They had and have to one. But they don't play it often. In fact, rarely. They prefer the 360 first, PS3 second and the Wii a distant third. Why? Because they say the Wii has "crappy" games. What this translates to is a huge base of Wii consoles sold. This allows for games to come up with some odd sales numbers. And those sales figures for Sports. Those just come with the console. They haven't touched that game for a year. Same with Wii play, they wanted another controller so they got that game. It hasn't seen use for a long, long time. They do prefer the Nintendo first party software for the Wii. But if you give them a choice they won't pick a AAA Nintendo title over a AAA 360 title. So, what you have is a really high installed base and a low number of games bought Wii console. Is that called attachment rate? I am sorry to say that the Wii IMO is basically the toaster of three consoles. You have to have one, but you rarely get all that excited about a toaster. Flame on if you like but this is how it is in my house.

"So much for nobody buying Wii titles, System Wars. " The argument is that nobody buys 3rd party titles and is why 3rd parties don't make Wii lead dev platform. And aside from Guitar Hero/Rock Band 2, this is still true.

"Wii Sports - 45.7 million Wii Play - 22.9 million" These two need an asterisk. "Wii Music - 2.6 million" This one fails on the part of stupid consumers.
