3DS pricing, date details promised in Sept. - Report

UPDATE: Nintendo has confirmed the announcement, but denied any release window confirmation.

Nintendo has confirmed to Bloomberg Japan that the 3DS is coming out in the island nation this quarter (see update below) and that pricing and an exact release date will be revealed on September 29. Nintendo had previously announced that the handheld would be out in America some time in 2011 after confirming at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo it would be out this fiscal year. No dates for other regions have been confirmed.

The 3DS on display at E3.

The Nintendo 3DS will allow games to be played with a 3D effect without the need for glasses and was debuted at this year's E3 in Los Angeles last month. The company also confirmed a wealth of first-party titles were in development for the handheld, as well as significant third-party support from the likes of Konami, Capcom, and Activision.

The 3DS is to be the fifth iteration of Nintendo's latest handheld. The original DS was released in 2004 in the USA and Japan, with a European release following in 2005. In 2006, the DS Lite was launched across the world, and in 2008, Nintendo launched the DSi. In 2009, this was followed up with the DSi LL (DSi XL outside of Japan), a larger version of the DSi. After years of runaway success, the handheld's fortunes seem to be slipping, with Nintendo blaming poor DS hardware and software sales for its recent quarterly loss.

Recently, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter suggested that the 3DS could retail in the US for in excess of $250--$100 more than the original DS did on its US debut. He went on to say that he felt Nintendo could still sell "millions of units" at that price point as he branded the 3DS a "revolutionary device" that would spur hardware and software sales alike.

UPDATE: Since this story was published, Nintendo has confirmed that it will be revealing date and price information for the 3DS on September 29. However, the Mario Factory has said it is has not confirmed that the 3DS will be out this quarter. The headline of this story initially stated that the 3DS was due out in October, according to the Bloomberg report. GameSpot regrets the error.

My only gripes are how the top half kind of sticks out when closed and that the control pad may be awkward to use.

I personally will laugh if I walk through a store and see the 3DS for 250. I will also not even look at it until the pricing goes down. For a game system that'll get a new version in a year or two, seen with the last four versions of the DS, 250 is high. Hell, I may even wait for one of those new systems to come out before buying, depending on how many complaints there are compared to the compliments. Also, I'm not getting the system as soon as they shoot it, I want to see how many mechanical difficulties there will be, as this is practically a first of its kind system. I want it though, no matter what the hell I just said.

$250.00? I doubt Nintendo will be stupid enough to price it that high. That is the price of their home consoles to start, not their hand held systems.

Why didn't Nintendo just make a new handheld. I hate that they keep coming out with a new iteration every year. Granted, I think this is the first iteration I feel is worth upgrading to. It's almost like it was a new handheld, except Nintendo decided to keep the DS name and format to keep capitalizing on the DS market and continuing to create growth in it.

@dontshackzmii i don't know if you knew the but the other screen usually only shows 1 thing a map, usually nothing else so i'm pretty sure it won't drain the gpu and secondly if you look at some off the screen shots, especially for MGS 3. I'd say the 3d version looks much better than ps2. And anyway what we've all been waiting for is a capacity as much as a gamecube so that we can finally play an authentic Zelda game and it's happening so the price could definitely be 250 but same i hope it's 200

Here is why I think the 3DS will be $180+... The Dsi XL is currently for sale at $180. The DSi was originally $180, so this must be atleast $180. I'm guessing $200-220

@ sebFlyte You 100% sure about that? The way I see it is. 3DS will be able to take advantage of new upgrades available such as more RAM but will not be able to take advantage on the original DS, if play at all. But it will play the original DS games with perhaps an emulated 3D effect where it is processed at two different angles to create the 3D effect.

I bought my DS Lite back in 2006 so I would say that the 3DS offers the perfect upgrade almost 5 years later. Can't wait to start DS-ing again like I used to. Oh and price it for 150 quid at the most... including Kid Icarus.

250$ for a system that cant even do much better then ps2 in terms of graphics is to much. even more then 200$ is not a fair price. i worry that 3d and 2 screens will drain the gpu so we end up having really lame looking games.

A new HARDWARE doesn't mean, necessary, a new platform. The hardware of Xbox 360 S is different of normal Xbox 360. It has a new motherboard, it has a new 45 nm processor (the older has 90 nm processor), it has a new size and case, a new design... and it is an iteration of the older one....

1. Whoever wrote this article really didn't pay attention in college. Incorrect information, and poor word choice. The 3DS is not the fifth iteration of the DS... it would be much better described as the fifth evolution. It's true that it is still a part of the DS brand, but like the progression to the Gameboy Advance, the 3DS is not the same thing as the DS. 2. I doubt Nintendo will release the 3DS at $250. $200 wouldn't shock me, but $250 would turn off a lot of parents looking to buy it for their children. Nintendo shouldn't forget that children are a large part of their demographics. 3. I don't think we'll see a release of the 3DS 'til March. They won't release it anywhere near Zelda, and I'm predicting a January release for that.

@sebFlyte: Perhaps but it should be made clear for people who do not yet understand that the 3DS is a entirely new system even IF it has the same formfactor and has "DS" in the name. Otherwise some people might falsely assume its just another DS model with "3D" effects. It is entirely new HARDWARE and should be pointed out as such. Such as this line here: "The 3DS is to be the fifth iteration of Nintendo's latest handheld" Which again is INCORRECT or if not incorrect then MISLEADING. It leads readers to assume this just is another model of the DS line. It is an entirely NEW system that happens to retain some form factor and play DS games too. You really need to get your information correct and write it in such a way to not confuse people who may not have all the facts already. As many people who may have several versions of the DS already may be lead to NOT buy the 3DS simply by being misinformed that the system is just a new ds model with 3d effects. Please write in a non-misleading way before posting articles thank you. I think had you actually seen the Nintendo 3DS in action at E3 or at the london showcase this week you would not so easily make that mistake.

Gamespot you are wrong the 3DS is the next generation of the DS. Which means it isn't the 5th iteration of the DS. The way that is worded makes it seem like the 3DS is just another DS. @ monson21502 They had a video of someone playing classic games on the 3DS in 3D those games were downloadable but I think they were mainly NES games. I think the 3DS will have a Virtual Console type service if that is true the 3DS could have GBA games.

A 3DS game cannot be played on a DSi.
I didn't say that.
... games can be played on both systems...
There are some games that will not play on the old iPhone that are designed for the iPhone 4. But there are still games that play on both. This is the same thing for DSi and 3DS.

@Evenios It *is* another form of the DS. It's a different hardware iteration with the same fundamental form factor and part of the same naming schema.

monson21502 hope it plays ds games. gba games would be a nice bonus too. ******************************************************************* They said at the conference that it will play all DS games. It probably won't play Gameboy games. I believe the DSi XL doesn't play Gameboy games. The regular DSi does play both DS and Gameboy games. I don't care what the price point is. I'm getting it at launch. I may actually get 2 of them and sell the other on Ebay. This will be the hottest item next year in the U.S.

about time this was corrected. I find it sad that today it seems most websites are using other already published articles as their source instead of finding out themselves by picking up the phone or sending out an email to confirm. Using a google translated article BLURB as "news" is poor doings. Even if Gamespot has a smaller staff then IGN it still should have a responsibility for proper reporting. and this article still incorrectly states that the 3DS is another form of the DS. This can confuse people. The 3DS is not another "form" of the DS it is a whole new system.

@Evenios IGN reported the date for the reveal of the 3DS release date approximately 2 hours 40 minutes earlier (if my calculations of Pacific Time is right) than GameSpot. It may have beaten GameSpot to this news, but you ought to take into consideration the manpower advantage that IGN may likely have over GameSpot. IGN does have a tremendously long << LINK REMOVED >> after all. There appears to be no official GameSpot staff list, but a << LINK REMOVED >> did somewhat show everyone in the US GameSpot offices. At around 33:44, you can count the number of persons there. It's not exactly matching IGN's number of staffers, is it?
