3dfx Looking Outside of Games

When the merger between 3dfx and Gigapixel was announced in a March conference call, 3dfx representatives spoke about new opportunities to be found in providing graphics for portable platforms. With the stiff competition the company's Voodoo5 3D accelerator line faces in the gaming market, 3dfx has found it necessary to restate its plans to expand beyond its current focus.

In recent shareholder letter, CEO Alex Leupp said, "We plan on extending our markets from providing the technology that primarily serves gamers to providing technology that will make graphics an important differentiator for a wide variety of products, ranging from handheld digital assistants to cell phones."
