$300 Version of the Xbox One S Listed for December Release, Microsoft Responds [UPDATE]

The system that Microsoft touted the most at E3 reportedly won't launch until months after the 2 TB model comes out in August.

[UPDATE] A Microsoft representative told GameSpot today that the Xbox One S dates listed at Microsoft and other retailers are only "placeholder dates."

"We haven't announced a date yet," the spokesperson said about Xbox One S launch timing.

The original story is below.

One of Microsoft's big announcements at E3 2016 this week was the Xbox One S. At the briefing, Microsoft said the console would begin its launch in August 2016 and touted a $300 price. As it turns out, only the 2 TB version of the console, the most expensive model that goes for $400, will be available to buy then.

The 1 TB and 500 GB models, the latter of which was heavily touted during Microsoft's E3 briefing on Monday, will not be available to buy until December. This is according to listings for the systems on Microsoft's own online store.

No Caption Provided

We have followed up with Microsoft in an attempt to confirm the specifics around the launch timing for all Xbox One models. Here are the Microsoft Store listings for all Xbox One S models: 500 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB.

Listings for all of the Xbox One S models on Amazon also show the same release schedule.

All of these systems come in a "robot white" color, while the console itself is 40 percent smaller than the existing Xbox One. It also has an internal power supply (the current Xbox One does not), while it supports high dynamic range, though actual performance is not improved.

The Microsoft Store listings also reveal that only the 2 TB Xbox One S model comes with the vertical stand. It can be purchased separately for $20.

Coming after the Xbox One S will be Microsoft's Project Scorpio, a system that is four and a half times as powerful as the existing Xbox One. It launches in holiday 2017, though a specific release date and price have not been announced.

The fact that people think the Neo and Scorpio will make games look so much better on their TVs are in for a surprise. 4K might make a difference on a monitor that you sit extremely close to but on a tv a few feet away you won't notice a difference in resolution (and yes I have played games on PC and compared between 1080p and 2160p and no I am not PCMR I much prefer consoles). I'd much rather they use the extra power to equal or surpass ultra quality preset at 1080p.

I know we are the minority here...... But no need cater to majority of the GS user base.

I can feel that PCMR blood pumping in your heart.

The $300.00 version of The Xbox One Slim is to be a nice Christmas present? Strange that all of the Xbox one S console versions are not releasing at the same time, Since the only difference is a 500GB, 1TB or 2TB HDD. Still the 2TB is the one Microsoft is wanting to promote.

@Megavideogamer: I'm assuming they know the 500gb will sell better since they offer external HD support, so they're trying to sell the 2 TB model for people that can't wait to make a small profit (on the hdd alone).

@firedrakes: I'd agree, but external hdds are really cheap now and, at least on the xbox one, faster then the stock version. So you could have a 500gb xbox one s and a 2tb external for much cheaper than just buying the 2tb model, plus you'll actually have 2.5tb of space.

I was wondering how long it would take for current gen consoles to be available with 2TB drives out of the box.

Can't even imagine getting by with 500GB.

@johnrayjr: PS4 needs to release a 2tb model asap... since they don't offer external hdd support. Xbox really doesn't need to.

@joshrmeyer: why should they since unlike the Xbox the ps4 HDD is easily user replaceable. I bought a 2TB off amazon for around 100 (probably find them cheaper now) and swapped it out.

@Iconoclysm: so then buy the data bank and put in a 6TB or wait for 3TB 2.5 drives to become available. It's really a non-issue.

@adkcrazox: Then why wouldn't the MS Store website show it? Also, the article we happen to be currently commenting on doesn't even say that. I have a few friends that work at Gamestop and if I'm being honest, they're dumbasses. I wouldn't believe anything they tell you; they're only telling you what you want to hear so they can lock in your preorder.

All I'm saying is, double check your facts before you plop down $350 on a console that releases at the same time as the $300 500gb model. At the moment, the 1tb model is the worst option considering gb/dollar and release date.

Why would you buy this knowing that a new better console is coming out probably late next year??? Save your money for Scorpio.

@Fine_TableLamp: Some people can afford both so there is no need to wait and then there are people that may want this but not interested in the Scorpio that's what makes having a choice so great

@Fine_TableLamp: Mostly because the cost of Scorpio is probably twice as much, and comes with the additional cost of buying a 4K TV.

@suicidesn0wman: Depends how they decide to tweak their games. If there is any kind of choice like pc, even those without 4k can play games at actual minimum accepted performance this day and age, 60fps. In that case the scorpio is worth it over the One S wich becomes utterly useless as you get the same shit you have today in a smaller package. Maybe with a bit less black crush if the better dynamic range helps that issue.

Otherwise yes the S models has more value for console xbox gaming, if there is no benefit without 4k tv.

If most games comes with 4k/30 fps games instead with no choice of tweaking the frames, then the Scorpio is an utter waste even if you have a 4k tv. Unless you really really want a console, you are better off either way on pc where you can still enjoy the same games.

Some of those games you don't even have to put up with Windows store.

@kadaverhagga: Phil said only 4k will be outputed. It'll down scale to your 1080p tv, but games will be made in 4k only it sounds.

@hacker_fc: You have a link for this? Because Phil was directed asked that question and said all games would output at 4k. He didn't necessarily say this wasn't possible, but if it was, I'm not sure why he wouldn't just say: "of course. If the developer wants to make a game in 1080p was awesome frame rate and graphics, so be it." But he didn't. He beat around the bush about the subject and emphasized that everything would output in 4k. He also said if you don't have a 4k tv, not to expect games to run better except fames that use dynamic resolution (coding based on hardware to maximize fps by lowering resolution... so a game like halo 5 will always run in 1080p since the coding would detect the scorpio and allow it to run at full hd.) I know that game is 60 fps, but any xbox one game that is 30 fps isn't guaranteed to run at 60 fps, past, present and future. I would love more clarification on this new console, as I do get excited for new consoles since I was a kid. I've done a lot of Googling with bot much luck, resulting in several different answers. One thing I know for sure: Phil is really adamant about scorpio being for people with 4k tvs, even going as far as saying: if you have a 1080p tv, get an xbox one s, because without a 4k tv you won't see the benefit of scorpio. I sound like a Debby downer, but I have my doubts about the scorpio. It sounds awesome, if priced right. One way or another, if neo releases this year, I'm getting it because I need a second ps4 for couch co-op (I have a poor nephew). If it's over $400 @ launch, I may rethink it. But at $400 or less I'll get it. If scorpio is over $500, I doubt I'll get it. But at $500, maybe (if I have a 4k tv by then).
