In 2004, Civilization creator Sid Meier revisted one of his earlier successes with the help of his current studio, Firaxis Games. The result was Sid Meier's Pirates! for the PC, a critically acclaimed swashbuckling strategy game that made its way to the Xbox in 2005.

Earlier this year Meier announced he would be dusting off and revamping another of his favorite projects, 1990's Railroad Tycoon. Now that game--Sid Meier's Railroads! for the PC--has gone gold and is ready to pull out of the station, Firaxis and publisher 2K announced today.

Sid Meier's Railroads! challenges gamers to create their own railroad empires and keep them up to date with the times. Working with trains ranging from steam-powered locomotives to modern diesel and electric trains, players will not only have to worry about getting cargo to its destination on time, but will also have to worry about business rivals, robber barons, securing patents, and other issues.

Sid Meier's Railroads! will be released in North America on October 17 and in Europe October 27. The game has been rated E for Everyone and will retail for $39.99.
