2016's Battlefield Will Return To Military-Style Roots

EA's CFO has already seen the game and it's shaping up to be a "fun, new Battlefield."

2016's Battlefield game, which was announced last month, will see the franchise return to its military-focused roots which the series is best known for, unlike the cops-and-robbers Battlefield Hardline.

EA CFO Blake Jorgensen made the comment today during the 2014 UBS Global Technology Conference. He said he has already seen the game and it is shaping up to be a "fun, new Battlefield."

"That will be a return to a Battlefield military-style game; more to come on that," he said.

As for why EA is not annualizing the Battlefield series like Activision has done with Call of Duty, EA CEO Andrew Wilson explained last month that, "We want to give Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline players more time to enjoy these games and immerse themselves in a game, the live service, and the community."

The next core Battlefield game is March 2015's Battlefield Hardline. Though there will not be a new Battlefield title for holiday 2015, EA will release its new Star Wars: Battlefront game during that window. That game is in development at Battlefield developer DICE.

Jorgensen said today that he recently saw the game and is excited about how it's shaping up.

Further details on the next Battlefield game were not provided today. However, In a 2013 interview, DICE producer Patrick Bach teased that Battlefield 5 was already in development. He said the game will offer "More features. More extras. More destruction."

Dump Hardline and focus on Battlefield 5, and avoid the yearly COD business model, it doesn't work. I don't want to hear about another Battlefield game until 2017 at least.

Return to? You can't "return to" after one spin off. I think the word they're looking for is continue.

Thank-you! This is something that the Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed games don't offer and why I just don't both with them anymore. Anyway, Modern Warfare has been done to death... it'll be refreshing if they go back to World War I or II

Unrelated, but... Looking at the image in the article... back in the days when I served army, one of the first things we were taught about handling assault rifles was NEVER to hold it by the ammo magazine. Like, holding it that way in shooting range/practice/war games would result in pealing potatoes or scrubbing toilets.

Mind you, I did not serve US Army, and AR was not US made. Was the artist here really that oblivious, or are there different rules for handling M16 and newer rifles that evolved from it?

<< LINK REMOVED >> You are correct. Using the magazine for stability increases the risk of a jam. The magazine is a little sloppy and loose in the magazine well. You can hold the rifle up high, by the magazine well though. Which is a part of the rifle and stable and will not effect the round feed into the chamber. That's what the artist illustration appears to be doing.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Ah, OK. Army I served was using assault rifles based on AK47 design... there was no magazine well/sleeve integrated in rifle's body - just an opening on frame with little latch between trigger guard and magazine, much as I recall.

Rifle handling was actually regulated in army service rulebook. It was not recommendation, it was requirement. How is it with US army? Are there strict rules (regardless of rifle design allowing for this way or handling) or is some freedom allowed to suite different preferences and styles?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Well things change. Today they have tons of attachments. Just like in BF4. And they change their policies. On a qualification course, there are some pretty specific guidelines or rules of how everything is done exactly yes. In combat, that stuff goes out the window and it's only about what gets the job done.

They say that Battlefield isn't going to be an annual release series, but then Hardline is set for 2015 and this game is only a year later in 2016. Hopefully that doesn't form a trend.

Either way, it seems like they're not really giving Hardline players much time at all before the new entry.

WW2 would be cool. It was an overdone genre 10-15 years ago but it's been a while. Would feel fresh again, and hasn't been done (well) with current hardware. Vietnam/Cold War era also would be cool.

But I will *never* buy another Battlefield title again, unless I know it works 100%. And I will *never* pre-order another DICE product. I advice people to do the same. I won't say I don't buy, since I'm a BF fan, but I just won't get it in the first few weeks/months, until I see it works for EVERYONE.

I pre-ordered BF4 and got a 2k-euro (over than that actually) high-end PC to play it with, the POS game crashes still every day. I've tried literally every fix and solution on every forum and YouTube vieo. Every week I hear some guy say "Oh, do this and that, it will stop the crashes". It doesn't, ok? It's all crap. Nothing helps for some people. There's still some major flaws hidden in BF4 code.

And when people say "Get a new computer" they are talking out of their asses. Every other application and game works 100%. I have some of the most demanding games, and do a lot of heavy duty image/video/sound editing (it's my job). And I get *impeccable* performance, in every other game / application. I can max out almost any game, and get 100+ fps with zero crashes. EXCEPT with Crashfield/Bugfield/Battefailed 4, which crashes every frickin' day.

I want a Battlefield that takes place in the eastern front ( WWII ). Imagine fighting in Stalingrad with buildings collapsing around you. That would be sick.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'd like to see WWI Battlefield with even larger fights - I'm thinking of Planetside 2 sort of fights (over a 100 players on each side... or more). But regardless of size of battles - biplanes from WWI would be great for this sort of game. They were simple, slow and manoeuvrable, were usually flying on low altitudes and could be damaged or taken down even with small arms. Machine guns strafing and hand-delivered grenades. And no gadgets - just simple visual-based flying. And then, early tanks. Trenches. You could even toss in some cavalry.

I think this could be great background for a Battlefield game.

Take a break! I love BF3 and BF4 (a little less...) and am getting a bit bored with them. I haven't played BF4 since May. I think the series needs a break so it doesn't become the new COD where a new game comes out every year or two. Besides if Battlefront is that good I'll be playing that.

I just don't want another 5-20 years in the future setting where there are some crazy Hollywood terrorists and crap, we've had enough of that lately. With Battlefront around the corner, 2143 can wait. Two modern military shooters in a row after Bad Company, I think BC3 can wait too.

The next installment should be a historical setting. It would contrast so much with the current feel of the Battlefield games, with their digital music, the orange and blue themed menus, just the high-tech look to everything. I remember World at War being very unique in that respect, and that might be why I enjoyed it so much.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The mainline Battlefield series has always been modern warfare ever since BF2. So maybe a spin-off taking place in a different setting, or an expansion pack like Bad Company 2: Vietnam.

But the next numbered game should maintain its modern setting.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The game is Battlefield. It's supposed to be military themed. A lot of long-term fans were upset with the divergence from that. They aren't trying to make drastic changes, but rather, as the title and many points in the article state, return to roots. Did you read it?

It is fine if you don't like BF, it really is but Battlefail, I suppose you write M$ too.

BF was plagued with issues, but has gone on to become a fantastic game, I still play regularly.

As for the PC only guy above you, we can all be sure that this wont happen, there is far too much purchase power in the console market.
