2016 Is a "Year of Preparations" for Final Fantasy VII Remake, Producer Says

Producer Yoshinori Kitase provides an update.

New information about the state of development for the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake has been divulged. Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase says in a new issue of Famitsu that 2016 will be a "year of preparations" for the game, which suggests there is still a lot of work to do be on the project.

No Caption Provided

"I believe that this year will still be a year of preparations for Final Fantasy VII Remake," Kitase said when asked about his 2016 ambitions for the game, as reported by Siliconera. "I'd like to create a new kind of value for the hardware that is the PlayStation 4 for our next announcement."

The Final Fantasy VII Remake, a new version of the 1997 RPG, will be released episodically. The first episode is currently without a release date and, as Kitase's comments allude to, is likely still fairly far out.

I predict 2018 or 19 due to preparation.

I'm sick of all this hype and Sony's alleged exclusive rights to the game.

If you think about it as a business move it make sense for them....just messed up for us

Prior to there announcement of the remake there stocks was plumenting

Once the statement was made it sky rocketed. (the mere mention keep us all intrigued and provided residual income for them. They know this)

This is also the reason its in episodes and not coming out soon. If they make it in one game, we buy and we all get happy how would they keep a sustained growth for there shareholders and interest from us?

Rather lets milk it as long as we can. Have the game (games) come out over a long period of time, thus increasing our profit with sustained income, free marketing and gained partnerships with other vendors (whom may want to be in the game) (increasing profit), Profit off of DLC for each episode, and possible gain customer interest in other products and/or past products.

This makes there shareholders happy ;-). because they are now seeing a gain on there investment quarter over quarter.

It would not be smart for them to deliver this game anytime soon even if they were completely down yesterday .....

So let me get this straight they are releasing it in episodes to get it out faster and they say 2017 is the earliest it will happen. Why don't you just release it all at once two or three years from now instead of making us wait over a year for what will probably only be part one of at least three or four.

Avatar image for zeromanzero

@divinejester: it's a cash grab. Ff7 was not that big by today's standards. But they already grabbed my cash. I preordered on Amazon.

Unsurprising. FFXV and KH 2.8 this year, KH3 and FFVII episode 1 next year.

@jayz0ned: I bet it is not titled episode 1 and is like ff13 trilogy. I'm betting a 2019 release

A year of preparation? What the hell? I'm hoping this is a translation issue and he means development. Preparation suggests concept art and the like. You guys don't have to make a new game, you just have to remake an old one. Why would preparation take a year? God this has all the signs of a failure. How did square fall so far?

Avatar image for JRLennis
JRLennis

@ggsimmonds: They essentially ARE making a new game, because the original assets are far too old to be updated in a meaningful way. The only thing they're keeping is the core story and the characters. I think this is the right course to follow. Otherwise, there's no real point in remaking the game at all.

Avatar image for ggsimmonds
ggsimmonds

@JRLennis: You misunderstand entirely. They are not making a new game. A new game requires new concept art, new storyboards, new plot, new characters, etc.

That is typically what is meant by preparation. A remake should be able to quickly go into actual production/development, not take a year for "preparation."

Unless, as I said, it is a translation issue.

Avatar image for zeromanzero

@ggsimmonds: I think they will make so many changes that it feels like an entirely different game altogether.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

I don't think this is going to work out well. They are expanding too much on the original concept, it's going to get it out of hand. They should have kept if simple but it's like a kick starter that hit too many impossible stretch goals. It's going to be a hot mess.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy
GirlUSoCrazy

@zeromanzero: ARPG is kinda why I don't want it. If I wanmt that I'll just get a Souls game because Square does not know how to do action properly

Avatar image for zeromanzero

@girlusocrazy: Different standards and different opinions of what is a proper arpg. They are still technically doing action properly.

FFVII, likely to be delayed to the point of also being FF16. assuming SE doesn't make another mmorpg ofcourse.

I really do not care about the episode thing either way the game is coming out, though the combat really irks me. They are not even trying to remain faithful to the original wont even do some hybrid combat system.

Avatar image for JRLennis

@Elaisse: Actually, it does look like a hybrid of action RPG and menu commands from what little I have seen.

Avatar image for facts23

@jwab96: don't you guys read stuff about games before you buy them? why on earth would someone buy a game like battlefront if not for blind fanboyism to the star wars franchise? "they" don't care about you liking or not liking the game you paid for. they just care about the initial sales figures. if 70% bought the game and were disappointed - no one will take notice. they will just produce the next crappy title. and the circle of bad games and complaining goes on and on. just because of blind fanboyism and the failure to inform oneself about a certain game before buying it.

i just cant get behind this episode bullshit how long will the episodes be? is there any freedom to explore? seems like they know fans love FF7 so much that they want to squeeze every penny they can out of it. finally get the announcement of a remake and its nothing to be excited about just feeling cautious about it.

Avatar image for Mogan

@adamus: From what they've said, it sounds like they're making the game episodic specifically so they can create areas you can explore.

I seriously hope the backlash grows to the point where they have to reconsider making the game episodic. It'll never happen, but I can dare to dream. I was already aggravated by the drastic change to the combat, but I was at least willing to let that one go. I don't think I can get passed them dividing the game up in order to charge more money. Yet another reminder that Squaresoft has been gone for a long time.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy
GirlUSoCrazy

@rawkstar007: This is going to end up like Xenosaga on PS2... A grand idea that turns into a different game one sequel to the next with hugely revised ideas to try and reign it in to what's actually feasible in reality.

Avatar image for lion2447
lion2447

@girlusocrazy: I wrote a comment in a previous article saying pretty much the same thing. It also means there may be no point in grinding since your character levels most likely won't carry over. I used to love grinding early in the game and then feel powerful beating bosses with leveled up materia.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy
GirlUSoCrazy

@lion2447: Yeah, even in Mass Effect and MMO expansions they find some way to nullify all the grinding you do. Capped levels, or switching tactics to favor a new set of requirements, etc.

Crappy.
