2015's Top Digital Games Lists Include League of Legends, Call of Duty

League of Legends was once again the highest-grossing digital game during 2015, according to a new report from research group SuperData.

With an estimated $1.628 billion revenue, Riot Games' MOBA leads the rest of the industry by a wide margin. Only three other games in SuperData's charts topped $1 billion in digital revenue for the year: two on PC that are big in Asia (CrossFire and Dungeon Fighter Online) and one on mobile (Clash of Clans). SuperData notes that League of Legends closed out the year with its highest-earning month ever.

World of Warcraft was number four on the PC charts, racking up $814 million in digital earnings for the year. It was one of several Activision Blizzard games on the charts, with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare topping the console charts ($355 million), Destiny at number four ($291 million), and Call of Duty: Black Ops III (released in November) at number five ($212 million).

In fact, the console charts were dominated almost entirely by Activision and Electronic Arts (with FIFA, Madden, and Star Wars Battlefront). Only Bethesda and Take-Two were able to budge in, thanks to Fallout 4 and Grand Theft Auto V, respectively.

Activision was the highest-grossing digital publisher for the full year.

"The top-ranking titles offer a market picture in which Activision currently dominates," SuperData's report states. "Earning the firm $2.9 billion in 2015, Activision controlled six of the 30 top spots across platforms, including the titles that came under its ownership following the acquisition of King Digital late last year. Supercell takes the number two position overall with $1.6 billion in earnings across its titles in the top 10."

PC games earned more ($32 billion) than those on mobile ($25 billion), but narrowing the totals to just the top ten games shows the two nearly tied. The top PC games accounted for $6.3 billion in sales, compared with $6.1 billion on mobile.

Overall, digital earnings were a record $61 billion on all platforms, an eight percent bump over 2014. Digital console game sales saw the biggest increase (34 percent), but made up just $4 billion for the year. Only the top three console games would have even cracked the top 10 on mobile.
