1GHz: What About Intel?

Intel hopes to take some of the wind out of AMD's sail with a 1GHz announcement of its own tomorrow.

The UK-based online mag The Register is reporting that Intel is supposedly set to announce its own 1GHz Pentium III tomorrow in hopes that the processor giant can defuse some of the hype surrounding AMD's recently announced 1GHz Athlon CPU. According to the article, Intel will also announce the availability of 850MHz and 866MHz versions of the Pentium III, and Intel will use some marketing ploys to demonstrate that an 800MHz Coppermine is just as fast a 1GHz Athlon.

Computer manufacturers that are expected to support these new processors include Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Compaq. We'll let you know when and if that announcement happens.
