The wireless controller offers hair trigger locks, swappable components, button remapping, and more.

[UPDATE] The "Elite" Xbox One controller will cost $150. You can read a lot more about it at Microsoft's website.

The original story is below.

As part of Microsoft's E3 2015 briefing today, the company officially announced a new Xbox One controller.

It's called an "Elite" controller, and it aims to offer "pro level precision." The wireless pad has hair trigger locks, swappable components, and button and paddle remapping.

No Caption Provided

The new controller has been designed for Xbox One and Windows 10, and is different than the slightly tweaked Xbox One controller that comes with the new 1TB Xbox One console.

Microsoft did not announce a release date or price for the new Elite Xbox One controller.

Microsoft's E3 2015 briefing is ongoing; follow along with our liveblog here.

I think the pricing is reasonable for PC gamers who want to play with something better (they invest a big amount of money on their machines, so their pricing margins are different). But for console gamers, it's too expensive. In my opinion, $100 would have been a perfect balance point. I know its called "elite" for a reason, but for the console market is just too pricey.

@RoboThreat: Precisely. I think PC gamers will pay for it with no problem. I see it perfect for them, but for console gamers it might end up being too expensive.

@StonerDemon: I'm primarily a PC gamer and I'm not buying it. I've got the Razer Sabertooth and it has been doing these same things for a couple YEARS now for about 80 bucks. I got mine for 60. 90 dollars LESS than they want for this thing. 150 is comically overpriced. Raising the price to 150 doesn't give it more value if other premium products have the same features and functions for significantly less. And Razer is known for having premium prices on their products anyway!

No way. I'd like to have one just to have another premium controller, but I've got the best controller I've ever had in the Sabertooth and it is far cheaper.

@Jedilink109@StonerDemon:

I don't think that it is that bad. Rezer products is no more expensive than other brands, but the build quality is lower, giving it a theoretical lower value for the money. Razer products basically fall apart compared to others, or at least looks worn down after a relatively short amount of time.

With MS's controllers tho, I know a bunch of people, including myself, that have had them for 5-10 years, and they hardly look used.

Also, this new elite controller will have more features than the Razer one, and the native support for both X1 One and Windows.

So even tho it is not cheap and the price could be a tad lower, I don't think that is unreasonable.

@Nikolajj: The only things that it has that the Sabertooth controller DOESN'T is trigger locks and swappable analog and D-Pad components. But I have the Hori FPS Assault Pad that has swappable Analog sticks and I got that thing for 40 bucks.

This controller is outrageously priced. This thing is absolutely NOT worth 150 bucks. Like I said, other than those swappable parts and the trigger locks, the two controllers are the same thing overall. I highly doubt that adding trigger locks and swappable analog sticks adds up to a 70 dollar difference in price. Like I said my Hori controller has swappable analog sticks for 40 bucks! Then that means the trigger locks and the D-Pad are worth an extra 30? I think not. They're going for the "elite" market. And part of that market has NOTHING to do with product quality, build quality, or product features and functions. It's all about paying a LOT of money for a "special" product. One that someone can show off to their friends because they paid top dollar for the "elite" product. And that's EXACTLY what this controller is. It may offer some great things, but at least 50 bucks of that are just to appeal to this "elite" payers market and that is absurd.

@Jedilink109: Like I said myself, it's not cheap. I'm not saying that you get the same or more per dollar, you definitely do not.

But the Elite is also wireless, that's one more big feature. We cant know about the precision part, but it is a mig selling point for the elite, so it must be top notch :)

@StonerDemon: I agree, if it was $100 it would have been an instant buy for me as a console gamer. Now.. I'm on the fence, big time. I'd actually like a chance to try the controller first and see how great it actually is.

@berzerk0912: Yeah. I'm not AGAINST the controller itself! I think it looks great and has some awesome looking features! I just think the price is an extra 50 bucks more than the controller should be worth. To be honest I think that the standard controllers for the 360 are about 30 bucks more than they're worth.

I remember years ago controllers didn't cost frickin 60 bucks. But once the last console generation came about it was the norm. Now everyone just ignores that the controller prices shot up over the years.

The price isn't as bad as some seem to be making it out to be, granted, it's high but you get a fair bit for your money. $150 is pretty reasonable when you consider comparable pads. Either way, as much as I'd like one it's certainly too rich for my blood!

@grove12345: There's the Hori FPS Assault Pad for 360 and PC that has some similar functions. I got mine for 40 bucks through the Microsoft website. But my primary controller is the Razer Sabertooth. It's 80 (although I got mine for 60) and literally does ALL of these things that this controller does for 70 bucks less.

Modded xbox controllers have been a thing for many years and really competitive gamers swear by them. I'm not sure what the price usually is for these kind of things though. It would be nice if Microsoft were to undercut most of the third party ones but I don't think this does. Maybe by virtue of these being official they'll have better support and function better than any third party modded controller. That could make the price point appropriate, who knows...

@Xristophoros: I'm sure it takes both, like the standard one. Only question is whether they're putting the battery and cable in the box like the $75 one or selling it separately like the $60 one.

Just bought a razor mechanical gaminh keyboard for my rig for $199. And a thrustmaster driving wheel (just for driving games) for $299.

Where was the outrage?

Oh I forgot, the faux outrage is reserved for Microsoft.

It's a premium product folks. No one is forcing anyone to buy it. I for one will likely buy one, after paying 700 bucks on a new GPU.

@turianshepard: And yet, their products are widely successful with premium gamers.

In addition, i also used the Thrustmaster steering wheel example. +$200-$500 for a device you can only use on one platform and with one genre. Where's the outrage?

At least this new elite controller works on both PC & XBox, on all genres.

I think it will be a hit.

@vogtcha: So where were all the cool first party Titles they were going to focus on at E3? They couldn't fit them in because of this over priced controller. Sure you might buy it to game on PC but as a controller for Xbox it is the biggest waste of money MS could make.

No controller is worth $150, unless it's gold plated and socketed with sapphires or emeralds.

@rasterror: I'm serious. It's grip buttons that make it attractive for me. I hold my controller with four fingers over the top (two on each side) for accessibility. The grip buttons give me another two I could easily reach. As for your comparison, you lost me.

they should rename it the cod controller :D i think microsoft is doing its best to recapture the core gamers they lost to sony. unfortunately, an overpriced, gimmicky controller is not the answer. the "backwards compatibility" update (which isn't completely true since not all 360 games will work on the x1 and they will not run directly from disc, but rather via a digital download) is still their best idea of the past couple years. good on them for that one... that is one area they have an advantage over sony...

Say they have new games (not monotonous sequels or remasters or BC 360 games), and they give you a new game controller instead. This is where MS development money goes. Half the price of the console for a single controller to boot. Smh. But, hey, at least you can play 360 games now on that next gen tech lol.
