15-Year-Old Hit by Car After Playing Pokemon Go

"The Pokemon game took her across a major highway at 5 o’clock in the evening, which is rush hour. No game is worth a child’s life."

A teen from Pennsylvania was hit by a car this week after playing Pokemon Go, according to local news site WPXI. 15-year-old Autumn Deisroth was struck Tuesday evening and was hospitalized for injuries to her collarbone and foot; she also had numerous cuts and bruises.

Her mother, Tracy Nolan, told WPXI that the accident happened right after her daughter finished a Pokemon Go session and was crossing a street.

More from the report:

Nolan told Channel 11 News that Autumn looked down a hill and ran, but was struck by a car.

"The Pokemon game took her across a major highway at 5 o'clock in the evening, which is rush hour," Nolan said. "No game is worth a child's life."

Nolan said the driver stopped and held her daughter’' hand until she was taken to the hospital.

An area hospital, the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, told WPXI that Autumn wasn't the first case they'd seen as a result of Pokemon Go. However, the report didn't include any information on those cases and how severe they might have been.

"Parents, don't let your kids play this game because you don't want to go through what I went through last night. I really thought I was losing my daughter," Nolan explained.

Earlier this week, authorities in New York urged Pokemon Go players not to play the game while driving a car or riding a bike. A man who was playing Pokemon Go crashed his car into a tree, though he survived.

Pokemon Go has become global phenomenon on a level not even developer Niantic might have imagined. Seemingly everyone is playing it, including WWE owner Vince McMahon, while the game is also helping people sell pizza. You shouldn't play Pokemon Go everywhere, though; don't play Pokemon Go at the Holocaust Museum or while driving.

"happened right after her daughter finished a Pokemon Go session and was crossing a street".

So she wasn't even playing when crossing ?

Also dont get why people look at their phone all the time, a pokestop you walk towards so you dont need to check all the time and when there is a pokemon you can make your phone vibrate or play a sounds.

Same for the distance/backyard shenanigans/trespassing, 70 to 100 meter range around your location, no need to dive into someones garden.

Jeez, are these people really this fucking dumb? I mean really? You blame a game because your kids retarded ass does not know to look both ways before crossing a road? That is like one of the very first things you teach a child. The game didn't "take" your kid anywhere, their dumb ass brain did.

Niantic needs to develop a "terrain actuator" engine for this game, PRONTO so that kids go to the RIGHT places for Pokemon, and things like THIS don't happen!

The terrain actuator would have a library of terrain types and, depending on what the camera shows on screen, select the appropriate Pokemon.

Example: the main body of a lake could contain a Squirtle or Magicarp.

Natural selection always finds a way. Sounds like the girl wasn't looking where she was going. This has nothing to do with the game.

When you think you've made something idiot proof, they just go and get a bigger idiot.

Apart from that, I hope the girl makes a quick recovery and remembers that there is one thing you can't catch on Pokemon Go, and that is common sense. Use your loaf! FFS

@elmeanno: Also you can't blame the game when it says "remember to pay attention to your surroundings at all times" also, the game doesn't lead you anywhere, you have freedom to move where you want to.

Seriously? You're going to blame the game? Look, I'm not blaming the parent or the kid for this. It was a terrible accident. But maybe you ought to reconsider the cause being common sense, or rather, a lack of it. You could do the same damn thing just riding a bike, if you aren't paying attention to your surroundings.

I'm glad the accident wasn't fatal, though I don't recall being that clueless at 15. Didn't have Pokemon Go, but I was the type to have my nose in a book on the walk to a friend's place. Alone, yes.

Was always careful, and a book would take more attention than fixed locations on a map. Meh.

If I did get hit, my mum would've kicked my ass for being blind, but she wouldn't even think about taking away my books. She let me out of the house 'cause she knew I was paranoid about traffic.

Playing the game and having no common sense will do that. But let's not look at ourselves and take responsibility. Let's blame the game that told her to walk into the street without looking.

Oh wait. You really can't because the game says in big bold print when you start it, ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS

Pokemon Go made me do it is like saying GTA made me rob that store, or Resident Evil made me violent. Christ, I remember idiots saying columbine happened because of the matrix with how they dressed, which didn't come out till after the shootings.

I'm sure most of the readers here grew up with a parent that made sure that they definitely knew to stay out of the street. Good parenting=driving that common sense home hard, Bad parenting=let's blame social apps and games for my child being a spaz

@edhc44: @edhc44: I, too, until I think about the problems these people cause for others. If I was the driver and not at fault, it would still bother me, even if it was anger at the kid and not guilt. Or if I swerved and injured another driver instead. It doesn't just affect the morons.

Okay, so i don't want to sound like a dick because losing a child would be terrible... but why the hell did you let her play alone? Don't let her have access to it if you aren't with her. Dear christ, this doesn't seem like rocket science :S Your kid could die to MANY things FAR easier :S

Also, i should mention that yes, i know she's 15 but clearly a 15 year old with that little... awareness... ahem... anyways XD

It's called natural selection. If you are too stupid/unaware and then get killed by your surroundings, it's best your genes do not get passed along to offspring.

Nature. Win.

serously? a 15 year old? you think the fool would know better to LOOK both ways. it even says in the game when its loading to be AWARE of your surroundings. geez.

what a f-ing idiot. One thing though i would imagine the upcoming pokemon go plus would be a really needed addition to keep the game safe without having to pull it up all the time. It really is up to the players to do this though and its not up to the game makers to police people , i hope no one is able to sue and win over that because it clearly states when the game loads to "be aware of your surroundings" at all times.

Yes. Blame the game for your kid's stupidity. Of she's stupid enough to walk out in traffic and not use a crosswalk, like she's supposed to, then it's her own fault for getting hit by a car. Survival of the fittest people.

um really.... how about learn how to be a parent......

im sorry this happened but don't blame a game for her actions. if my kids were playing this game i would teach them that a GD highway is not the kinda place to be walking around. walk around on the sidewalk..... then at least we can read about them being hit by a drunk driver,... who was playing Pokemon Go while they were were playing Pokemon GO

There comes an age where ppl need to take some responsibility and know that they messed up and had a huge lapse in judgement and mommy and daddy shouldn't have to baby a high schooler. Some ppl just mess up, the parents could have told her a thousand times
