1 TB PS4 Slim Finally Coming To US

Slim console, big hard drive.

Sony has announced it's bringing the 1 TB version of its PlayStation 4 Slim to US stores "this month."

The company announced the news on Twitter, at the same time as confirming the console's price as $300. That's the same MSRP as the current 500 GB model, though it routinely sells for less. It's not yet clear if this new 1 TB version will be an alternative to the 500 GB device or if it will replace it.

Now Playing: What are the Differences Between the PS4 and PS4 Slim?

The 1 TB variant had not been available in the United States until this point, despite it coming to Europe in September of last year. The original launch of the PS4 Slim came shortly after Microsoft released the slimmed-down Xbox One S, which also starts at $300. For more on the two consoles, check out GameSpot's comparison gallery.

Since then, the PS4 Pro--which also contains a 1 TB hard drive--has been released, while Xbox's Project Scorpio is gearing up for launch later this year. We recently learned a lot more about Microsoft's upcoming mid-generation upgrade, including its full specs, what its devkit looks like, and why it's coming around a year after PS4 Pro.

Is there any chance that Sony announces another console that is even better than the Pro at E3? I want the pro but if a PS5 comes out next year, then I will just wait.

@spartanx169x: No. Get a pro. You know as well as I do that as soon as Sony starts working on PS5, it will get "leaked" and you will know about it. If they do make a ps5, it will be 2019/2020 before we can buy it.

@gaminsincepong: I think they might mention something vague about it, kinda how MS did about scorpio. Not to inform you about the console, but to take a little hype away from scorpio. It's basically what MS did, but Sony's turn. I'm thinking 2019 date still, with no time line other than that announced (so it could be anytime that year, and Sony can decide based on hardware prices, etc when the best time to release it would be)

@joshrmeyer: You might be right. But if they do show a new ps, they better make it backward compatable, or there will be salt. Makes no sense to release a new console this early and have zero backward compatability. The devs wouldnt like it either.

@gaminsincepong: I can't think of a reason it wouldn't be backwards compatible. The architecture is just like a PC now. I'm pretty sure Sony is going the same route MS is going... as in, games will run on different machines, buy the one you can afford or desire to have.

@gaminsincepongPlus, second gen Pro upgrades this summer will be more accomplished than the first wave, which kind of ran the spectrum from really impressive to meh, they barely touched it.

It was all rather experimental there for the first few months, and few developers really tapped the new config for its best case potential.:

@sodapoppimpski: well I think the 10 Terraflops seems to be a stretch given the cost of curent cards that are capabale of that. At today's prices it would cuase the PS5 to be in the $600 range if not more and that is assuming wholesale prices of the cards no retail. However in two years its possible, you can get the graphics quality of the GTX970 for roughly $150 less with the GTX 1060. Depending on what advancements are made between now and then(2019) maybe a $500 console? Thats a big maybe. Heck Sony could go with a 8 terraflops of power and still make the claim as being the most powerful. graphics power aside. Sony has to be at least planning for the next replacement. Will they actually wait to see how scorpio does before responding? Maybe. But if it does well before they respond then that could push the PS5 out to 2020. Thats a big risk. Sony is in a comfortable lead. But that does not guarantee they will remain in the lead. the PS3 came out a year later and was more poweful , but suffered sales for 2/3 of that generation. They caught up. But still, Do they really want to be in that position again? Microsoft has shown that every other generation of what they make typically does very well. Original xbox soso in sales. 360 a huge hit. XB1 lagging sales, Scorpio.... remains to be seen .But look at windows - XP did well, Vista- terrible, Windows 7, GREAT, windows 8 terrible, Win 10 GREAT. It stands to reason scorpio can do well. So now its Sony's move. Will be interesting to see what happens over the next 12 to 18 months.

@spartanx169x: Well in 3 years, they went from 1.8 tflops to 4.2, a 2.5 times improvement. So by 2019 or 2020 10 tflops is definitely doable, even for $399.

BTW: Xbox sold like 25 million compared to its competitions 155 million. Would call that so so lol. Don't forget that scorpio is still this generation, it's an xbox one.

@spartanx169x: Sony isn't releasing ps5 any earlier than 2020 is my point. Then Microsoft will be in line to release there new console and so on. You are going to be looking at 3 year increments for consoles

@nativepixel: there is actually a few articles as of this week that are saying that Sony is currently working on the PS5. So its entirely within reason that they could announce something. I actually went looking after posting this comment.

See:

https://marketexclusive.com/sony-playstation-5-rumors-release-date/92341/

the article while nothing definitive seems reasonable.

@sellingthings: I've got a plain PS4. But considering upgrading to a slim or a pro. I travel A LOT and the smaller console would be very beneficial .

@martintule24: The lag would be unbearable for multiplayer games. i have a Wifi hot spot that i keep with me however I'm not always where I have a reliable signal enough for that. I take my XB1, PS4 and a gaming laptop where ever i go. I travel up and down the east coast with occasional trips out west. I will soon be getting the switch as well. $300 is a small price to pay for a console quality experience on a long flight.

The pro is worth it now with the boost mode and better options even if you don't have a 4k tv.

The way things are going with digital sales I wouldn’t be surprised if future consoles carried with them a minimum of 1TB if not more.

1TB isn't good enough as it is and it's why I got myself a 2TB for my PS4.

@davillain-: Ditto... and I don't even own that many games... I'm a little over 1 tb used right now. The part that sucks is I gave away my 500gb hdd, so I can't really trade in my ps4 for the Pro (which isn't that big of deal, but is one big reason I'm not going to upgrade)

@davillain-: same here i had the original with 2tb I installed myself but then upgraded to the pro and just put the same 2tb in. I usually buy the disc to save space myself and 2tb seems like the sweet spot for mu use.

@joshrmeyer: I seem to remember something about that. He implied the average person might struggle with upgrading hardware. While I did upgrade my PS4 when I got it. there was plenty of opportunity for me to screw it up. for example, corrupting the software when loading the new drive, attempting to put in the wrong size drive, losing power while loading the software. But I will also say I actually prfer what XB1 did in allowing USB drives. I now have 4.5 terrabytes of space. - two 2TB drives and one 5ooGb drive. and unlimited ability for more. I hve both consoles and I have to be more selective for what games I keep on my PS4. I will get the pro , IF no new console is announced at E3.
