1 TB PS4 Slim Finally Coming To US

Slim console, big hard drive.

Sony has announced it's bringing the 1 TB version of its PlayStation 4 Slim to US stores "this month."

The company announced the news on Twitter, at the same time as confirming the console's price as $300. That's the same MSRP as the current 500 GB model, though it routinely sells for less. It's not yet clear if this new 1 TB version will be an alternative to the 500 GB device or if it will replace it.

Now Playing: What are the Differences Between the PS4 and PS4 Slim?

The 1 TB variant had not been available in the United States until this point, despite it coming to Europe in September of last year. The original launch of the PS4 Slim came shortly after Microsoft released the slimmed-down Xbox One S, which also starts at $300. For more on the two consoles, check out GameSpot's comparison gallery.

Since then, the PS4 Pro--which also contains a 1 TB hard drive--has been released, while Xbox's Project Scorpio is gearing up for launch later this year. We recently learned a lot more about Microsoft's upcoming mid-generation upgrade, including its full specs, what its devkit looks like, and why it's coming around a year after PS4 Pro.

I was just at the store the other day thinking, "Where are the 1TB PS4 slims?" Now all I need is a decent bundle to go with it.

I'm guessing a new Pro with a 2TB dove or bigger will be announced at E3.

@7tizz: its the console people are most likely to get and the mobile is not the primary gaming platform for hardcore gamers.

@7tizz: I take critiques all the time and apologize when I'm wrong on a subject. I mean, I could copy and paste some of your comments but that's a waste of time. I've actually stuck up for you on several occasions when people called you out. But I think others would agree with me, based on your comments, you dislike PS4 for some reason.

I don't believe 1TB PS4 Slim is not being sold in the US. We have it in the Middle East since 2016! I had multiple PS4 since 2015 (500GB, 1TB, Special Editions, Slim, Fats) the only one I didn't get yet is Pro, they all functioned same, I didn't feel any difference between them, you can get 500 GB console and buy an external HDD, it will be cheaper than getting a 1TB PS4

@sellingthings: He's had 5 different ps4s. I don't know how you'd make money off them unless they're in short supply in the middle east. And I seriously doubt they are cheap there... being from the middle east, he could be dirt poor or filthy rich... I guessed the latter.

@DarkCaptain3: As others have said, Optical out from your tv to the Astro base will work. Or if you have everything to a receiver, optical out to Astro's once again...

@sellingthings: That doesnt really make sense. If you are using the receiver to get the audio feed, the receiver needs to be on... Also, I would imagine anyone using a receiver is also using it for video as well..

Unless the way you wire things is ps4 to TV, back to amp but that's a strange way to wire things...

@sellingthings: I disagree with that all of what you said. Receivers do a much better job of processing signals than a tv will, it is the full purpose of a receiver.. Ill take the connection to the receiver first any day. Also, if you do HDMI to the TV, you will never get HD Audio as it cannot be passed via Optical. Obviously not needed for the headphones but will be an issue with your home theater (the main reason you would have a receiver).

In regards to the headphones, again, most connect to their receivers for audio and video as it makes it much easier. One press of a button and both audio and video turn on for that source. The way you are doing it is much more complicated and unnecessary.

The way I do it and have ever seen any professional have it done, is by having the receiver as the brain of the home entertainment and everything connects to and from that as the main hub.

@sellingthings: And I would say you dont know what you are talking about. I feel bad for those people you are ripping off meanwhile setting them up incorrectly compared to how it should be done.

Also, SPDIF does not pass HD Audio. If you are talking in the case of headphones alone, sure, doesnt matter but for those with home theaters, it does. From Wiki:

S/PDIF is based on the AES3 interconnect standard.[1] S/PDIF can carry two channels of uncompressed PCM audio or compressed 5.1/7.1 surround sound (such as DTS audio codec); it cannot support lossless formats (other than 2ch LPCM) such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, that require greater bandwidth[2] like that available with HDMI or DisplayPort.

@DarkCaptain3: don't know much about headsets, but if it optical out, how is it wireless? And why don't they have another option, like using your tvs optical out?

@joshrmeyer: The optical out connects to a mixamp which is what sends the signal out to the wireless headsets. The mixamp enhances the sound making up for the usually lowered quality of wireless headsets allowing you to hear things that you couldn't normally hear over the speaker or from other headsets (such as still being able to hear people who have Dead Silence perk in a CoD game). It can work on a tv with optical out, the problem then is that its connected to the tv and not the console. At that point you are hearing EVERYTHING on the tv. If you're in a party chat you hear the party chat however you also then hear the regular lobbies chat on top and it can cause problems (this was the problem on the xbox consoles, its different on ps4 however and you merely have a echo effect due to it being connected to the tv now). As jerjef also said, not all tv's have the optical out dongle (the one I use in my room does), if you are someone like me who has to travel a bunch and take your console with you then you can run into that problem right there.

@DarkCaptain3: Good explanation... sounds complicated. Not to be rude, but with your knowledge of hardware, didn't you know it didn't have optical out before buying it? And maybe they stopped putting optical out on tvs, but even the cheapest of cheap tvs from years ago have it, so I'd be surprised.

@joshrmeyer: Well I wanted to buy it for the 1TB hard drive but I don't plan to if it has no optical output. I've been running out of space like crazy and have to keep deleting things.

@DarkCaptain3: There's some nice 1tb external drives on amazon for $50... so you'll have 1.5tb of space. I put a 2tb in mine, but only because external wasn't supported yet. Can you not find the older model anymore that has the optical output?

@joshrmeyer: Some headsets have an optical out dongle that sends a wireless signal. Plugging it into a TV is an option, but not all TVs have them.

@jerjef: I don't understand why you'd go from optical (pretty much a perfect signal) just to convert it to wireless? I'm sure there's explanations, and you don't need to waste your time telling me. My point was if you have that kind of tech knowledge, why would you buy a slim knowing that? Just kind of an odd complaint. And I haven't seen a tv within the last 7-8 years that doesn't have an optical out... although it doesn't seem to solve the OPs problem anyways. I feel bad for anyone that this happens to, and don't understand why Sony did it, unless it saved a butt load of money, which I doubt. To me, the slim is the cheap ps4... even cheaper than the launch one. It's not tailored to people with these fancy sound setups apparently.

@joshrmeyer: This is how wireless headsets work. Headsets dont play 5.1 DD or DTS, so it doesnt matter. They need the feed via optical to send the signal wirelessly.

@chubby170: Still doesn't make sense... every wireless headset I see in stores is Bluetooth. Why would you dongle optical to your headset? (Unless that's all that supported, which would be lame)

@joshrmeyer: Lol the optical connects to the headphones base, then a bluetooth signal from base to headphones. Since headphones dont play true dolby digital, they have its own amp to make up the sound and send to the headphones.

Hope that makes sense...
