No one really wanted Army Men games to come back, but that's okay.
Army Men don't really need storylines because they're just small plastic action figures, but 3DO decided to throw one in anyway. Maybe they shouldn't have because the story isn't that good at all. You take the role of Sarge, a green action figure and just like before you are at war with those evil, vile, and mean spirited tan army men. Apparently, there was a peace treaty between the greens and the tans but those sneaky tans abided it to start war.
When you start playing Sarge's War you'll probably notice the controls. You shoot with the A button which is odd because now-a-days it's almost mandatory to have the R trigger as the shooting button. R and L buttons are used for lock on and strafes. There isn't much variety to the controls and they just aren't comfertable.
Sarge's War is about as basic as these kind of games get so expect little use of strategy. The levels aren't long nor are they very challenging. They get repetitive as hordes and hordes of enemies come and you just repeat the same tactic over and over again. Shoot. There are portals in the levels which just don't make sense because portals and Army Men don't fit together.
The graphics in Sarge's War aren't what you would call 'eye candy' either. The levels are repetitive, if somewhat unique, but that doesn't amount to much either. It's not a terrible looking game, but it's not a good looking game either. There isn't much detail or sights to see also. The sound is okay. Nothing noticeable but the SFX are good enough. I didn't really see any problems.
Overall, Sarge's War may be worth it if you have ten bucks to spare and enjoyed past Army Men games but the single player isn't good and is very short. The multiplayer isn't much fun either, as it only offers a few game modes, none of which are much fun at all. It was okay but far from good.
