Area 51 doesn't deliver anything that you haven't seen before in a FPS, and should only be recommended as a rental.

Midway has done some great games, like Psi-Ops, and some okay games, like The Suffering. They have now come out with there latest game, Area 51, a game where you must shoot through legions of aliens to uncover the secrets of what went wrong in the base. While this could've been a great idea, the bland, repetitive gameplay and the unimaginable environments will probably leave you disappointed and frustrated at the same time. The gameplay, like I said, doesn't show you anything that hasn't been done before. The controls are really frustrating to get used to, and the repetitive battles and sometimes dumd AI will bore you throughout the entire game. Hell, I quit near the end of the game cause I almost feel asleep killing aliens ALL of the time. Who woulda thought that uncovering the secrets of Area 51 would be so dull and boring? Simply speaking: Play this game if you've got nothing better to do at all(which i'm sure you do).........no i'm not kidding. The graphics are superb...........for the N64 that is. It may use ragdoll physics, and it might have okay-looking cutscenes, but that won't save you from the unimaginable, repetitive corridors that constantly plague you whenever your trying to find the right room........good luck with that, by the way. What's worse is that the character designs, except maybe some of the aliens, look really jaggy and completely ridiculous at times. The sound really isn't the highlight of the game, unfortunatley. Even though it has famous actors like David Duchovny and Marilyn Manson(What?), they really do a poor job of portraying the characters they play as, and it really is disappointing, because David would've been perfect in a game like this. Why Marilyn Manson is in this game, don't ask. The rest of the voice acting is pretty mediocre, as well as the screams and shrieks of the aliens, which don't sound all that menacing to me at all. The guns, big and powerful looking as they are, sound really annoying to me also, and will probably drive you crazy throughout the rest of the game. Overall, Area 51 is a bland, repetitive(once again), boring game that will only appeal to gamers who want to find out what's up with Area 51, that's it. I can only say a few things to those brave, courageous gamers: Drink a hell of a lot of coffee and energy drinks. If that doesn't work, look on the bright side: At least you'll have something to put you to sleep if your an insomniac.
