A Great British Game

User Rating: 8.9 | Archer Maclean's Mercury PSP
Whichever way you look at it, this game is a great piece of work. The overall look, style and feel of the game is superb, and the graphic really show off the PSP's power. Alot of work went into getting the game physics right to give the blobs of mercury themselves a realistic texture and this shows through, the textures and colours of the mercury and the various 'worlds' look fantastic.

The gameplay took a tiny bit of getting used to. I personally am not a big fan of the PSP's analog nub, and as the movement of the mercury requires the analog nub to be used it was a bit of a change for me. Soon after beginning to play the game I realised why the nub was so important to the gameplay, it allows for curving and better accuracy. One thing that may annoy some people is the difficulty of the game, some argue the game is difficult to begin with, but i felt that difficulty increases suddenly and sometimes too quickly. This can leave you spending a long time on one level and can become very frustrating. This aspect of the game spurred me on to get to the next level, as I was determined not to let the game beat me, although if you don't have the patience you could end up putting the game down.

No complaints about the sound on the game. Each world has it's own unique musical style which blends well with the backgrounds and level designs. Hardcore gamers will enjoy the unlockable levels for getting high scores, which adds to the replay value of the game.

All in all Mercury is a great game that has alot to offer any PSP owner, and although it may not be as popular as Lumines, it is an extremely strong competitor for the PSP's top puzzle title.
