Overpriced Mediocrity

User Rating: 6 | Anthem (Legion of Dawn Edition) PS4

This game shines at some things, but fails to deliver on the most important things at basic level... I find it very hard to believe this game was in development by a large team for 6 years.

Story(skipped): I don't care for story unless it's really good. This one's not and delivered mostly by wasting time.

Graphics(8/10): Great

There's nothing much to say here. It looks nice, but not groundbreaking.

Combat(7/10): Skills look nice and feel impactful, but overall damage output feels like I'm doing end-game with worst possible gear(from the very start)

Combat feels amazing at some things and completely awful at others. For instance, abilities and dodges feel amazing, but cover is mostly non-existent and fairly hard to use when it's there.

Weapons feel absolutely horrible, both due to the way they handle (things such as accuracy, recoil and such) and the damage they do. It takes 2-3 shots of a scout rifle (slow, accurate mid range weapon) to kill the weakest enemy and about 6 "headshots" to kill most other enemies. You can empty all of your ammo reserves at Titans, and other Large monsters and they will most likely survive with over half of their health remaining.

Game content(3/10): Lacking... At this point I would be surprized if majority of people stayed in game after reaching max level.

I think it's easier to refer to this as "content" rather than content. First of all, in free-play any kind of meaningful activity is sort of scarce and the world feels empty. Don't get me wrong, you get stuff shooting at you all the time, but it all feels trivial, kind of like generic trash monsters you see in most MMOs, that you don't even notice after a while.

Over game feel, excluding the above(2/10):

This game feels like a private beta / early access kind of game. With loads of tiny issues that destroy the otherwise playable game.

  • Loading screens are EVERYWHERE and even with SSD and $2000+ PC they take long.
  • Enemies feel..... stupid. I feel like devs made them hit harder to make up for complete lack of "intelligence" in them. If they can attack you - they will, if not they will just move towards you.
  • Clunky first person mode in the hub feels like I'm playing a floating camera and not a character
  • Equipable Loot is rare and feels meaningless. It's a "looter shooter" and everything that can be different on 2 items of the same type feels trivial, like "+5% damage to fire abilities"...
  • Game punishes you for playing with other people. Squad Tether, that teleports you to squad if you're too far away triggers a loading (mostly a problem in missions). In free play players can leave you without loot.
  • Core story missions require you to do hours of CHORES.
  • Ironically, melee only feels right on classes that are not made for melee.
  • You have to come back to hub AND RUN THROUGH ENTIRE HUB to turn quests in. As some reviewers pointed out: if you have slower PC, you'll be spending most time in loading screens while doing missions.
