Disappointing.

Let me walk you through my impressions in sequence:

-oooh, nice smooth graphics

-story seems intriguing

-controls sure do suck

-music?

-okay, being killed by the beast is now just stupid

-why can't this fruitcake jump more than 1/2 a meter?

-Water water everywhere

-Zap, I'm dead for the 5,421st time.

Seriously, my enchantment with Out of this World blew out after just 1 day. I was starved for a new game, and in the early 90's I wasn't picky at all. The main flaws? 1) No reward system. After playing for several hours, your character has died dozens of times and barely proceeded to the 3rd area. Seriously, there is nothing that just harms you; everything will immediately end your session. 2) the controls. I am glad that I played OotW if only to make me appreciate a solid control system.

There's no real background music, although the sound effects are good. I recognize that the graphics were somewhat revolutionary at the time, but I would have gladly sacrificed the smoothness for some detail.

The story seemed promising, but it advanced too slowly to keep me interested. A random, ectomorphic youth is suddenly deposited into an alien world in which he is immediately set upon by a relentless Beast and hostile, Michelin Man natives. To survive, the spectacled spaz has to pull switches, press buttons, and scurry from place to place to escape a doom that is always at his heals. I'll admit I never beat this game, but like I said, I knew I wouldn't want to beat it after the 1st day. In fact, it was when I finally figured out how to proceed that I decided it just wasn't worth it.

I am very persistent, so I put a fair amount of time into this game which I disliked after the first day. In the end, Out of this World served to "build character" and make me appreciate better games more.
