I'm angry too. Angry I didn't buy this game a lot sooner!!!

User Rating: 10 | Angry Birds PSP
Angry Birds is one of the most popular downloadable games going right now, and for good reason! This game is super fun and addictive as anything. The story behind the game is that a bunch of pigs (green pigs, for some reason) have stolen a bunch of bird eggs. The owners of the eggs have found out about it and are sore upset with those pigs, hence the name of the game! And the birds aren't taking this situation lying down. Your job is to help the birds fight back against the pigs, destroy them, and recover your stolen eggs.

Once you get in to the game you'll find the screen is split up in to two halves. On the left side of the screen is a giant sling shot from which you launch your angry birds. On the right side of the screen are all of the pigs you need to attack and ultimately destroy. The pigs are always fortified within some sort of building or other types of structures that makes them hard to get at. These structures are built out of any combination of wood, ice, and rock, so the type of structure you are up against directly influences how you go about attacking it. Within the structures there will a lot of times be obstructions present like beach balls, different types of food items, stones, even crates of dynamite! These various objects can sometimes be helpful and can other times be a hindrance, so you must learn to use them to your advantage. On any given level there are usually between 3-6 pigs that you need to take out. As for your birds, on any given level you will usually have between 1-5 of them fire off. To make things even more interesting there are a number of different types of birds you will use throughout the course of the game. The red bird is a straight shot. The yellow bird is a straight shot, but you can give it extra juice at the end of it's trajectory for additional damage. The black bird acts as a big bomb. The white birds drop an egg bomb from above. The blue bird splits in to three smaller birds for an area effect. The green bird acts like a boomerang. And the giant red bird is still a straight shot but does a lot more damage due to it's massive size. You will be given various combinations of these types of birds, depending on what level you are playing.

All you have to do to beat each level is destroy all pigs before your birds run out. You score points for destroying pigs as well as for destroying any and all environmental objects along the way. If you defeat the level quickly and have birds left over that you didn't use, you score big bonus points for each one of them. Throughout the levels you will unlock a golden egg every once in a while, but more on them in a bit. At the end of each level you will receive your score as well as a star rating based on said score (star ratings range between 1-3 stars). To defeat the game just beat all levels and it's kaputs for those evil pigs! However, if you want to achieve a 100% completion rate you have to score 3 stars on every level . . . and that is no easy task.

As for the layout of the game, it's pretty simple. From the main menu you hit "Play" (your only option at that point) and are taken to the chapter selection screen. There are 5 chapters in the game. The first four are all story chapters, respectively titled "Poached Eggs", "Mighty Hoax", "Danger Above" and "The Big Setup". Within each of these chapters are a great many levels. The first chapter includes levels 1-1 through 1-21, 2-1 through 2-21 and 3-1 through 3-21. The second chapter includes levels 4-1 through 4-21 and 5-1 through 5-21. The third chapter includes levels 6-1 through 6-15, 7-1 through 7-15 and 8-1 through 8-15. And the fourth chapter includes levels 9-1 through 9-15, 10-1 through 10-15 and 11-1 through 11-15. The fifth and final chapter of the game is where all of your golden eggs go to. Each golden egg you collect throughout the course of the game represents a bonus level that you can access in this last chapter of the game. I haven't unlocked them all just yet, but I believe there are at least 10 of them. The bonus levels look pretty intricate at first glance, but they are all for show and are actually pretty easy.

The game controls are very basic, you only use 4 buttons in total. To scroll the view of the game screen left you press the L button, and to scroll the view of the game screen right you press the R button. The analog button you pull to the left to stretch your slingshot and get ready to fire your bird. You can fine tune the line of trajectory by moving the analog button up and down after you have it pulled to the left. To fire your bird once you have him pulled back and set to go, press the X button. For the birds that do special stuff like split in to three smaller birds, drop egg bombs, come back in a boomerang fashion, etc., you press the X button again while they are in mid-air to engage those features. Believe it or not that is all for controls!!

For tips and tricks the only thing I can preach is patience. Each level has a solution, it's just a matter of finding out what it is. When you start a level, scroll back and forth and think about where you should strike for most damage, depending on what bird is being launched. Eventually you will figure it out. There are some levels that will always elude your best efforts, but most of them you'll figure out and earn a 3 star ranking on sooner or later. Also learn to use environmental objects to your advantage, they can be a key factor in a lot of levels.

As for pros and cons . . . there aren't really any cons that I can think of! This game was cheap, it only cost me $4 to download. And for such a basic downloadable game it lasts forever, there are 195 story levels in this game as well as the 10+ bonus levels! That's pretty ridiculous when you think about it. The other thing this game has in spades is fun factor. Angry Birds is super addictive and so quick and easy to play, I was sitting up in bed until 2:00am on a lot of nights recently! I'm sure most people have at least heard about this game by now but if you don't have it yet, get it. It's one of the best gaming values you'll come across.
