The game that makes The Exorcist (with the deleted scenes) rated PG-13 ...

User Rating: 8 | Amnesia: The Dark Descent PC
Not that I was a fan of The Exorcist myself, but it is a very scary movie with even scarier after-effects (A friend of mine started praying after he watched this movie). Anyhow, I am an established horror fan ever since I was a little boy, and even though I used to be afraid of them I still wanted to see them...even more. Now I can watch any horror movie without the (added) fear that I may soil myself...
That was until I started playing Amnesia. Then I started soiling myself again /hyperbole
Where do horror movies get shot? Castles! Of course. It's a classic cliché that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I always thought that it was the bad architecture of the medieval architects that made them scary but that is another story. As you may have guessed by now, the game starts in a Gothic castle in Europe somewhere within the XIX Century with Daniel (that's the respected You, or the protagonist) awakening without knowing what's going on or even where he is. A memento says that he must follow the "liquid" (you can guess what that "liquid" is in horror works) and so the dark, scary, eerie, crawly, flabbergasting, depressing, Lovecraft-ian adventure commences! It is a ride of a lifetime, I assure you.
I don't remember well the last time I used to play games with puzzles in it, not since PoP:Sands of Time at least, in Amnesia puzzles are adequately hard, not too easy and not too hard, just there. So it's all good for you folks that don't want to think a lot.

What really sets the game apart from other survival horrors is the realism and the atmosphere.

Here you have to face it (like in real life, if it ever happens) that you don't have any supernatural weapons or abilities, you are just a normal powerless human being, and all the monsters that you will encounter you will only have to evade them and never face them in Kombat! You can't even get a good look at them too, you risk your sanity!

Another good trait of the game is the incredibly dark, morbid, eerie atmosphere that is all around you all the time (with exception to some weak light sources like lanterns, candles). Spend too much time in the darkness and you just might go insane leading to distortion of your view, usually twist and liquefying effects on the screen, of the Amnesia game. The only game I can think of that surpasses this atmosphere is one trip to the Shalebridge Cradle in the game Thief: Deadly Shadows, nothing beats the horror of that stage, it still is a horrifyingly awesome experience.
Nevertheless, the bottom line will be that Amnesia will not let you dry (literally), it is a game that at first glance may look so but it will grow on you and you will want to check what comes next. I would recommend this game to any horror fan.
