In alley cat you play a scruffy lil' cat out for love. It's basically a platformer, and being from the old DOS days, will only really run well on a DOS emulator, such as DOSBox.

The game is basically a time-waster, racking up high scores in a series of minigames. Back before Solitaire, this one was up there with the best of them.

You start off down in the alley, and you need to jump to the top of the fence, then from there wait until one of the flat windows open to throw rubbish (which you need to dodge to avoid getting conked on the head) then leap into the house to run one of the interesting minigames. They range from swatting a bird cage off a table so that you can catch the songbird which flies out, to diving into a hilariously gigantic fish tank to catch the fish while avoiding electric eels.

After completing a round of any of the minigames you exit the flat, and then the next series of windows to open will all show you a female cat. Leap into any of those windows to start the love minigame, where you need to reach the female cat waiting on the top tier. You'll be foiled by the cupids lining the side and top of the screen, as well as other male cats guarding all the other tiers in between. Should you reach her, you'll get a bonus, and then exit to the alley to repeat the entire sequence again. Your bonus score carries over, and multiplies insanely if you manage to stay alive between each minigame, and the high scores are displayed prominently on the fence lining the alley, giving you the incentive to try "just one more time!"

Alley cat's fun lies in the simplicity of the minigames. You can play a round in under a minute, in fact. This was a great game I played as a kid, and even now I can still remember the catch theme song which played over the IBM speakers. Don't miss out on this great classic, it's worth the pennies you'll get it for while digging around bargain bin collections of old games.
