I love the "Age" series. Age of Empires II was the second RTS I ever played after Command and Conquer: Red Alert. That game was just so awesome from the ability to fight Elephants with Samuai or Vikings with dudes throwing giant axes. Years later, I picked up Age of Mythology from a good buddy of mine, and I felt incredibly nastagic about that game. True, it was an "Age" game, but It didn't feel right somehow. The game had some historical elements in it, but overall the game got way too ridiculous. So when I heard about Age of Empires III, I got really excited. The colonial period is probubly my favorite historical period, and I was looking forward to blowing some stuff up. But, my computer wasn't good enought.
Fast foward a few years, and I have a brand new laptop and cash to burn. So I'm walking in a Best Buy, and I come across this lovely package containing not only a game I have wanted for years, but both expansion packs for it!
In Age of Empires III, you try to build a colony that is supported by a European Nation, Or Native Tribe, or Asian Power, and try to obliterate your enemies. It's just plain fun. Taking down a huge army of Samurai as the Aztec is awesome to behold, and watching a massive naval battle unfold between European forces is incredible. However, it is in these places that the game slows down. My PC is WWWAAAYYY better than the minimun requirments, yet I got some considerable lag during matches once the fighting got intense.
The Home city feature is pretty cool here, and I love how this game portrays that you are not a independent force, but I smaller group dependent on a mother country. Not a lot of RTS's have this sort of thing going for them. The Custimization of you're city is pretty much worthless though. None of the options, with the exception of having the Hunchback of Notre Dame if you're home city is French, are all that interesting.
Bottom line, pick this game up. With 14 factions to play around with, decent campagien, and natives to exploit, what's not to like?
