with a great storyline and characters that grow on you, this game met all the expectations it had after ace combat 4....

User Rating: 9 | Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War PS2
I become a fan of the Ace Combat series after the 4th installment in the series, coming out early in the PS2 era, ace combat 4 had amazing visuals/design followed with fun gameplay. But you don't care about the 4th, do you? Let's get this review of Ace Combat 5 for the PS2 going.....

Gameplay:

While it stays true to it's air force tactics, you may choose to buy/sell jets to better prepare yourself for the mission at hand, and even interact with your fellow pilots, which makes the gameplay for Unsung war much more fun than the 4th.

Gameplay - Story:

Co-Sign: Blaze, your headed back from a mission when your comrades go down. The setting - late 2010, Osea i believe. After your captain goes down during a mission, you must maintain the flight lead, command your fellow pilots as the following:

down - cover

up - attack

left - disperse

right - special weapons/any other command

Basically explains itself. You can also respond to your fellow pilots comments, whether they may be foolish or serious, left = yes, right = no. press nothing for no response. After this, your comrades will also respond to your comments, which doesnt really affect the game but makes it more interactive so you have something to do while flying about.

You get more of a feel for the characters as the story goes on, as tragedy falls on them, and you gain more allies, and enemies, who you may never suspect, along the way. (so you better not skip through the cutscenes, which are a major part to the game)

Gameplay - Graphics:

The cutscene graphics were visually attractive, being smooth and clean. The actual gameplay graphics had some minor flaws though, as you pay close attention, the little details on the plane are ignored, and the surrounding area looks like it was hardly worked on, as building are roughly designed, being flat and sometimes smaller than the plane your'e piloting.

Gameplay - Game Modes:

Well, there is a lack of game modes, making the game kind of boring after you finish the story. And with no multiplayer this time, (which means no battling friends in dog fights like in Ace Combat 4) makes playing it not all that much fun.

Gameplay - Controls:

The controls of Unsung War stay true to it's basic format:

o = fire missles

R1 = speed up/thrust

L1 = slow down

right analog stick = move around

triangle = lock on/change target

select = change weapons

x = guns (unlimited guns this time around, depending on game difficulty)

Final Thoughts-

The Good: interactive gameplay, nice graphics, great/long storyline, some familiar characters from ace combat 4,

The Bad: no multiplayer, lack of game modes, story may get confusing at times, nothing to do after you beat the game except to unlock more planes/difficulty levels,

Final Ratings-

Gameplay: 9.4/10

Graphics: 9/10

Sound: 9/10

Controls: 9.2/10

Fun Factor: 8.4/10

Final Score - 45/50 = 9/10: superb

Well, that's about it for my review on Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. I do reccomend this game for aviation fans and none aviation fans alike. While the missions may get tedious and difficult at times, remember, there are multiple difficulty levels to suit your style of play.

Well, thanks for reading my review, hope it helped. Bye for now!
