Repetitive 2D platformer saved by a little inventiveness.

"AAAHH!! Real Monsters" is a 2D platformer based on the Nickelodeon cartoon of the same name. You play a trio of monsters called Ickis, Oblina and Krumm. They are young monsters in monster school and have to pass various exams in order to have a monster licence or something. The object of the game is to find a certain item in each level (a red sneaker for example) and/or to scare a certain person. The graphics are standard for a game released on this system in 1995. The sound is OK at best but nothing amazing. The gameplay has the highlight and the lowlight of the game. The lowlight is that the game is almost insufferably repetitive and I found myself willing the game to end once I got to a certain stage. On the other hand the saving grace of the game, the thing that makes it rise above the more mediocre platformers is the slight problem-solving aspect to the same (and slight is sadly the extent of it). Each monster in the trio can jump and attack, but they all have an individual different group ability. If there is a large gap to be crossed that cannot be jumped normally then Ickis can form a chain with the other 2 monsters and be thrown across, and if there is a platform too high to reach normally then Oblina can stand on the other monsters, forming a tower to reach the high ledge. However, Krumm's ability seems like an after-thought as he treats one of his eyes as a golf ball and fires it out of the immediate screen enabling you to see further ahead than normal. I found this ability to be pretty much useless. And also, like I said before, the abilities are hardly used in the game at all. The lastability is quite poor as well, because once you finish it I doubt you'll want to ever play it again.
