The 5-Year Struggle To Reinvent God Of War

In the aftermath of God of War's meteoric launch on PS4, director Cory Barlog recounts the long road to reinvent one of Sony's iconic franchises.

On the surface, God of War was an ambitious project for Santa Monica Studio. In many other ways, it was a downright impossible challenge. No one can attest to that more than the game's creative director, Cory Barlog.

In the video above, we sat down with Barlog to discuss the 5-year process of making God of War on PS4. He discusses everything from the conceptual stages to the game's inspirations, systemic overhauls to the emotional core of its new narrative. He also reveals insight into the early years of the God of War franchise's creation, and how much convincing it took to get the team on board.

GameSpot has an abundance of God of War coverage from the last few weeks, and we'll likely be discussing the game throughout all of 2018. You can catch up with other stories on GameSpot, and other videos on the site's YouTube channel.
