Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 Coming To Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X, And Current Gen This Year

One of the best puzzles games on Switch and PS4 is getting a sequel, and it's coming to next gen consoles.

Sega has announced Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, the sequel to one of our favorite puzzle games. The game will launch for Switch, PS4, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One on December 8, 2020; the PS5 version will release "Holiday 2020" (as its release window has not been announced), and a Steam version will be available for PC players at a later date.

As with the original, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 combines the two huge puzzle games mentioned in its title, making you switch between them on the fly and master different styles. The original Puyo Puyo Tetris was pretty great, and earned an 8/10 in GameSpot's review.

The game, which will allow for up to four players (offline or online), will feature a new Skill Battle mode that uses a new "card" system. Pre-ordering the game will land you eight such cards at launch, including three based on the Sonic the Hedgehog series. This mode will grant each character unique skills, and equipping Item Cards will let you use their powers mid-match to gain an advantage.

There's also a new Adventure Mode to play through with a unique plot. The first game's story was a lot of fun, so it'll be interesting to see what new things the sequel does. Some of the first game's characters will return alongside new ones.

You can check the game out in the trailer below.

Versus, Fusion, Swap, Party, and Big Bang modes all return. DLC will also come to the game, but it won't be shown until a later date.

The game will cost $40 for the physical launch edition, and further details about its digital release will be announced later. The game also features Xbox Series X Smart Delivery and PS5 upgrade support, so if you buy the game for a current system you can upgrade to the next-gen version for free when you make the switch.

This is not the only Tetris game announced for Xbox Series X's launch period--Tetris Effect Connected is also due this year.
