User Rating: 6 | Pop'n TwinBee SNES
Pop N' Twinbee is a scrolling shooter with a lot of action made in a very cute way with a lot of elements that really don't make much sense. But overall the game is a lot of fun, especially if played by a younger audience. The game's feel is a lot more for children than teens or adults. Gameplay: 6/10 In shoot 'em up games, there really aren't many opportunities for variety in game play. Pop n' Twinbee is no exception. The game is set first on a difficulty level determined by the player. You can play in either 1 player or 2 player mode. As you fly, you are confronted with numerous enemies, though what those enemies exactly are is hard to tell. Aside from the standard shooting, you can also toss bombs and use a special attack that sends out many little ships to destroy things on the screen that can be destroyed. While your shots and bombs do not run out, you only have a certain number of special attacks. The most interesting part of the gameplay is the 'bells' that are released from the smiling clouds. Yes, I know... very cheesy. But that is how the game is. The bells are released and as you shot the bells, they get bounced back and can change color. Each color gives a different bonus. some are point bonuses, some are weapons upgrades, etc. It is essential in this game to utilize the bells well to get what you want - as gaining points won't help you progress in the game. Graphics: 6/10 The graphics are very good except that you really never know what it is that you are dealing with. The drawings are cartoonish in nature. And while you can tell that each enemy is something... they are really made up things that kids would have no problem with. I would prefer ships or monsters. But cute enemies of undeterminable form works just fine. The colors are very vibrant and again add to the kiddy feel to the game. With a lot of bubbly and rounded images, this game really takes on a child's imagination. Sound: 6/10 The sound is decent in that the background music is not boring or annoying. The sound effects are good with the small explosions and shots fired. My impression is that the sounds were lessened to make the game seem less violent. This fits the game very well. Reviewer's Tilt: 6/10 I played an original Twinbee game on the SuperFamilyCom. This game is not as good... but also not as bizzare. Still, this game has a lot of really strange elements mostly because of the graphic design. This is a great game for kids... a mediocre game for everyone else.
