Battlefield 1942 shoots to the top

Electronic Arts' new WWII action game enters NPD's weekly sales chart at number one, while Warcraft III remains atop the monthly chart.

Comments

Electronic Arts is continuing to dominate the weekly charts as far as the number of games occupying the top 10 positions are concerned. This week, it's Battlefield 1942's turn to come in straight at the top, but with Madden NFL 2003, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, and no less than three Sims titles in the chart, Electronic Arts is looking as strong as ever. There was little change elsewhere in the chart, although Infogrames' Backyard Baseball 2003 and Icewind Dale II have been pushed off the bottom.

The monthly chart for August has few surprises, with Warcraft III retaining the top spot despite the continued challenge from Electronic Arts' The Sims and its numerous expansions, most of which have actually improved their positions since last month. Elsewhere in the monthly chart, RollerCoaster Tycoon and its subsequent Gold Edition are still mid-table, along with Microsoft's Zoo Tycoon, which has no doubt benefited from the recent release of its Dinosaur Digs expansion.
