A quirky game to play with friends while chugging Mountain Dew into the wee hours of the morning.

I first heard about Zombies Ate My Neighbors from a friend. "You haven't heard of Zombies Ate My Neighbors?!" he said. Granted, he was 7 years older than me. I eventually bought it 6 years later and haven't looked back. I introduced it to my friends, and they agree it has it's quirks, but these "quirks" are what make the game so damn fun.

The game has a top-down perspective similar to TLOZ series' first 3 console titles. It's pure run-and-gun gameplay. You run through levels playing the roles of one of two typical american teenage heroes Zeke or Julie saving "Neighbors" and shooting various zombies, evil plants, possesed dolls, werewolves, aliens, and hell, they even threw a giant baby in there for good measure. ZAMN has a very charming atmosphere, taking place in various locations, ranging from Small Town, USA to Transylvania. The arcade style is great, but it's too arcadey (is that a word?) for it's own good. I'm refering to the lack of save feature. It's a password game, which I hate with a passion. 48 levels of pure madness, yet it lacks a save feature? You've got to be kidding me. You only have 3 lives, but you can earn more if you collect enough points. You can also play with a friend to try and survive the apocalypse together.

The graphics can be summed up in one word: Solid. For 1993, these graphics are really charming, if that makes any sense. The character designs are actually pretty meta. It's as if the character designers were sent from the future to create characters that would make people 15 down the road say "Wow, thats so... 90's". The enemy designs are also great. They're as charming as the heroes of the game, the same goes for the environments. The soundtrack of ZAMN is very catchy. I know that when Earth is facing a zombie apocalypse, I'll be humming the tunes in this game to myself while fighting my way through middle America.

Overall, Zombies Ate My Neighbors is an enjoyable title. It's a fantastic game to play through with a friend, despite a couple major flaws. If you can find it for 12$ like I did, it's definately worth the purchase. It is also availible for download on the Wii's Virtual Console for 800 Nintendo Points (8$).
