A strange, creepy, hilarious and wonderful world awaits..

Zeno Clash Ultimate Edition, a downloadable game via Xbox Live arcade, is about the strangest game I've ever played. Environments that seemed ripped straight from The Flinstones and characters taken from a Pagan nightmare, Zeno Clash is an experience in odd.

Story- You have just killed Father/Mother (a giant creature with chicken legs, a creepy face and most likely, a hermaprodite) the actual father/mother of about 100 human and animal/human children including yourself. Your reasons for killing Father/Mother are so embarassing that you cannot disclose why you've done it. All of Father/Mother's children (your brothers and sisters) have now put a Jihad on you, and you must escape, constantly being dogged by the children and other enemies in the land of Bedrock-ish. You have a lovely NPC companion in the form of a hot looking girl with giant tusks coming from her head and the dialog between you and her is interesting and sometimes hilarious. It is not unusual to meet characters in the game breastfeeding pigs, elephants that talk and walk on two legs and assassins that throw squirrels with dynamite attached to them at you. Most of your weapons are hybrid-primitive: duel fish guns, skull bombs, rifles that feel straight out of a civil war game, etc...

Gameplay- ZC is a first person brawler (think Condemned and Breakdown), mixed with gunplay. The controls are good but not great. I would have liked the developers of ZC (originally a pc game) to have paid a bit more attention to how other first person games incorporated hand to hand combat, simply because games like Condemned and Breakdown feel a lot tighter and more responsive in this respect. Don't get me wrong though, the controlls are far from broken and the combat remains fun throughout the game. Another small yet important critique I have with the game are how anticlimactic the boss/mini-boss battles are: once your enemys health bar depletes to nothing, they simply drop dead in the same animation that happens when you knock them to the ground.

Sound/Graphics- The music of Zeno Clash fits perfectally with it's strange world and i wouldn't change a thing. Given that ZC is a pc port, the games graphics leave a bit more to be desired, but never remove you from the experience of trekking through its world with any noticable slowdown, pop-ups, or framerate issues.

All in all, Zeno Clash can be a very enjoyable experience for the open-minded or cult gamer.
