Plain, simple dueling for the hardcore CCG fans.

User Rating: 8 | Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship Tournament 2004 GBA
For a game centered on nothing but dueling various opponents, this game certainly hits the spot. Fans of the CCG shall also enjoy the Fairy King Truesdale, Kinetic Soldier, and Slate Warrior cards packed inside.

Once the game is turned on, it's time to battle a selected opponent. As duels are won, the prize comes in the form of selectable booster packs that grant 5 cards added to your collection. As more battles are won, more packs and more opponents become available. There are 28 total duellists, 23 which must be unlocked, and 1138 cards spanning 23 booster packs, of which only 5 are available to start.

The gameplay is good, the controls simple to learn. It can be ackward sometimes when trying to target specific things on the opponents side, but is a rare occurance. Unlocking duellists can be rather annoying as they have certain requirements that must be met which include the posession of certain cards to beating certain duellists X number of times in a row. Booster packs are unlocked when certain duellists are beaten at least 10 times, 20 for others, with a certain win ratio. These packs disappear when your win ratio drops. Managing your three decks gets some getting used to as well as managing and sorting through your collection. Once this hurdle is passed, deck management is a breeze.

The music is fine for the short term, but easily becomes highly repetative, mediocre, and doesn't add much to the game experience. Those planning to devote serious time to the game will find themselves turning the volume down.

All around, the game is a nice edition to the series for fans who don't want to bother with RPG elements, or other aimless dilly-dallying. Action starts within moments of turning it on. Even with a predictable AI, it's entertaining. Fans with a Nintendo DS would do better choosing Nightmare Troubadour, much better gameplay.
