Doodles is an excellent and innovative puzzle game and, though very challenging, brings enough to the table to hook you

Your Doodles Are Bugged!, an indie-game by Spyn Doctor, is a very new release but has already garnered heavy downloads on xbox live. Having put some time into the game, I can safely say it deserves its popularity.

Doodles is a very innovative puzzle game, but it's not out of the blue. Taking it's inheritance from Scribblenauts or maybe Okami, the premise of Doodles is as follows. Each "level", "map" or puzzle consists of a variety of doodles drawn on a white board/paper. At a location on each puzzle are a number of tiny (and cute) bugs. Solving the puzzle consists of drawing, with a pen that has limited ink, lines that the bugs can crawl and jump across towards a jar of honey. Each puzzle has a goal for the number of bugs that you need to make reach said honey, but with limited ink, the challenge is getting the bugs there. As the puzzles progress, they become increasingly difficult - so much so that later levels require a lot of trial and error, thought, and lots of dead bugs before you may figure out a solution. The honey moves farther away, the doodles which you often use to connect your lines are spread out, and some levels require you to get the bugs to location A to teleport to location B before they can even get near the honey.

With that said, despite the challenging level designs, there's always a lot of charm in the game and enough here to keep you invested. This is due partly to the colorful, fun, and charming presentation. The doodles are all interesting to see, the bugs are amusing, and there's great satisfaction gained from overcoming a particularly difficult puzzle.

Doodles isn't perfect however. The bugs are sometime's dumb, and because they walk and jump in patterns, it can be frustrating when the bugs don't go where they should. Add to that the fact that the ink is very limited in some cases, making levels overly difficult, and that dots placed for climbing rarely work right, there are problems here that could be fixed - but these mostly contribute to the difficulty, not any brokeness in the game itself.

Bottom line, Doodles is a very strong puzzle game, and if you're at all interested in innovative games, is definitely worth checking out.
