- Oct 6, 2012 2:49 pm GMTI'm a huge x-com fan and I can't wait for this game. I'm hoping they gave the soldiers a little more back bone in this one. One thing I hated was having so many troops that would panic. I'm hoping that as your troops get more expieriance their less likely to panic like ole Frank Pierce from the original.
- Oct 6, 2012 3:08 pm GMTProbably not what you want to hear but it seems that Soldiers gain less points to their Will stat through leveling up(A Colonel will have gained +14 to Will total) than they do from equipping the right gear.(Psi Armor gives +20)
But I have no idea how the stats work yet though, for all I know +14 might be huge and Colonels only panic if you purposefully screw up or a really powerful psionic alien is involved. - Oct 6, 2012 3:41 pm GMTI don't know if you watched the banned xcom base vid. In that, I think all of his character or Colonel rank, and they panic everywhere. One guy even take an aim at one of his squad and nearly kill the guy, lol
It just seem like this game will be even more prone to panic attack than the original.

Mutons have a special ability (Intimidate) that causes a panic chance if you damage but don't kill them.

I'm not with you.
You're not with me. - Oct 6, 2012 3:56 pm GMTGenerally speaking, higher ranking soliders are less likely to panic than rookies. However, under certain circumstances (on certain difficulties) everyone will panic, and surviving a critical injury reduces a soldiers willpower making him more likely to panic (they mentioned that even a high ranking soldier, if critically wounded a few times, will become absolutely useless).
On the plus side, Psionic attacks now need line of sight, so no more Sectoid commanders sitting on their bridge panicking your soldiers before they even get inside the ship.

Saw it, he actually had only one Colonel, the rest were a Captain, 2 Sergeants, 1 Corporal and 1 Squaddie. And the first one to die is the Captain which is probably why all the lower ranked soldiers freaked out seeing the second most experienced member get ripped to shreds and zombified in no time. - Oct 6, 2012 4:22 pm GMTI really think your guys in this game panic to damn easily
It should be held for the rarer stuff for example if an enemy kills 2 or 3 of your people with a single grenade and anyone that sees it gets paniced, that would make sense
Hyping these guys up as the elite of the elite just to panic anytime a single person dies is going to be annoying

This. Also, he was playing on classic (hard mode), so everything was magnified against him.

PSN/GT: daedralord9 - Oct 7, 2012 6:46 am GMTWell if you played ufo defence your used to your soldiers panicing. Some like Frank Pierce we REALLY bad about it. I'd always keep restarting till is gave me Nick Jones, Virgil Gallagher and Werner Foeberer in my starting sqaud. Those 3 were always my best troops and almost never paniced.
I could see if your best guy got killed it would make some of the others freak. The mind control being line of site is a big boost in itself. Guess we'll all see here soon how it is. - Oct 7, 2012 7:27 am GMTI only played Terror From The Deep and was too young to understand the nuances of it until I came back later and realized:
"Oh! If I load my guy down with gear, he runs out of Time Units faster!"
I remember there being 4 meters: Time Units, Strength, Morale (or was it bravery?), and Health.
It wasn't until my second play thru that I understood and appreciated more than the health & time unit meter. It also wasn't until then that I realized what the white bar filling my health meter meant: how close my soldier was to being rendered unconscious.
The med-pak had a pain killer that you could use to help keep your soldier from panicking. I tried it on soldiers that wen't berserk, but I don't know that it ever worked the way it was supposed to. I thought it was a nice touch though:
Thousands of meters underwater:
- Jefferson's freaking out! He just emptied his rifle firing at nothing. Get it together, Jefferson!
- En route with med-pack. Going to administer pain killers. Hang on Jefferson, I'm on my way.
Sometimes it got to the point that I would use my thermal shock launcher to incapacitate the guy so that he wouldn't fall under molecular control and I end up losing him. God, I miss that game. I know I'm already looking to far ahead, but I hope they make a sequel to this in the vein of TFTD. I'd like to see what they do with the underwater aspect. Back then, if they didn't say:
"You're underwater"
I'd have had no way of knowing until I pulled out my torpedo launcher and realized that it wouldn't fire.
