That being said, the only class I tend to dismiss are snipers -- I have my main Squad Sight sniper and a backup sniper with the other ability (Snap Shot, maybe? Can't remember).
Since my Squad Sight never gets hurt, any other snipers tend to be a waste of a spot.
Note: it MAY be useful to save your extras until you find a soldier with PSI abilities, but I've never had an issue where one of my main units weren't eligible.

However, I know I will be dismissing people on my current run soon because I'm using 2nd wave options Not Created Equally and Hidden Potential. Until a soldier reaches Colonel, I have no idea what their final stats will be, but I've got a few units that are not looking promising. Primarily a Sniper ranked Lt. with less than 80 aim... I have two assaults ranked major with 94 and 95 aim. Not even colonels yet, they're beastly. On a flanked target, 5 squares away, with a shotgun, 100% rapid fire. That freaking sniper, with a height advantage and damn good ground will typically have 67% - 75% accuracy... No thank you.

On the other hand I ended up with an assault that reached colonel with a hit of 107 & will of 128. and sadly he wasn't psychic. stupid RNG....
