I've been trying to figure out how a "Horde mode" would/could work in XCOM when I got to thinking about using a system similar to Fallout: Tactics' real-time system. You had action points (which varied by your stats) and everything you did outside of walking/running required 'x' amount of action points. Instead of ending your turn, allowing the other side to use their turn, and then waiting for your next turn to regain your action points, they regenerated in real-time.

I imagined XCOM introducing a Horde Mode using a similar system: everything taking place in real-time, your 2 action points regenerating. It still takes 2 action points to fire a rocket launcher or sniper rifle, so if your use an action point to move your heavy/sniper, you have to wait for that point to regenerate before taking the shot.

I think it would make it a lot more frantic and up the intensity, having to move soldiers, take shots, reload, hunker down, revive, etc all while a sectopod readies a barrage, and berserkers rush.

Thoughts? Wanting to feel it out here before posting it on the 2K forum.

There actually was a real-time XCOM game. The third game, Apocalypse, could be played in both Turn-Based and Real-Time. I've never played Fallout Tactics though, so not sure if it's any similar.

Yeah, Tactics is quite similar, but you can switch between real time and turn based at will. That said, I never felt that either of those play enough like this to make a proper comparison. The AP system in this game is way too different from the other two games.

Fallout Tactics is awesome. I have it installed on my PC. =)

Still, I jrecently got Deus Ex for $2.50 on Steam so I gotta beat that first. Also, I have my old copy of System Shock 2 and I need to figure out what patches I need to play it on windows 7. <shrug> I've got a bit of a backlog, but Fallout Tactics is on there!

On topic, I'd play your horde mode for XCOM EU. I'm wondering how things like equipment would work, though. Like, if I had basic weapons and armor would I just be screwed when Chryssalids and Mutons showed up? Conversely, if I had Plasma weapons and Titan armor it would just be silly until I had to fight Muton Elites and Sectopods. Any ideas on how equipment progession would work?

Man! I didn't think about all of that. Just off hand, you begin with basic loadouts, and then earn points for kills, kill assists, and what not, in the round. Between rounds you use credits to replenish med kits, rockets, grenades, heal yourself and/or repair your armor, replace your armor outright, or change your class.

As I'm sitting here thinking, perhaps take it a step further. Keep the Fallout: Tactics "real time" enemies, but make it that you can play with friends. You each control a single Xcom unit, as opposed to a single person attempting to micromanage up to 6 units. Then you have to co-ordinate what you're doing, while still keeping the tactical "how/when do I use my actions points) element.
